Placing Out of English 101 - Business School

Hi everyone,

Apparently my kid can place out of English 101 based on his SAT score. He will be a freshman in Smith in the fall.

On the "suggested 4 year plan" for his major, it says:

ENGL101 (if not exempt) or COMM107

Does this mean that he has to take COMM 107 if he places out of ENGL 101, or that he takes neither?

If he takes neither, I only see one other English course for the four years, which is "Professional Writing". Anyone know if this is an English dept. course, and if this indeed the only other English class a business major takes?

Thanks for any help!

I just got back from orientation yesterday, and as far as the kids in my section could tell, we took professional writing/Junior English later (like junior year). I was exempt from ENGL101 due to my SAT score (I’m a government major) and I don’t have to take really any English classes at this point. I would guess (though hopefully actual Business majors have more insight) that COMM107 is not required based on the wording.

not true, comm107 (oral communication) is required for all business majors because businessmen need good oral communication skills.

Agree with shayman91 that ENGL101 and COMM107 are independent of one another. However, your grade in ENGL101 can exempt you from taking the Professional Writing course required of juniors or seniors. That course is numbered in the 390’s. The specific number depends upon your major. That said, accounting majors may still need to take the Professional Writing course (whether exempt or not) in order to meet the criteria to sit for the CPA.
