Plans at USMA

Has anyone thought of what they want to study at WP?

mechanical engineering with a minor in history or english (i think thats possible).

Human Geography with a minor in Terrorism Studies!

JQ,

You can major in ME...but I don't know about minoring in anything. ME is a 44 class course. That is the maximum number of courses you can take...so unless you validate something, you are in trouble. You might want to check that out.

The supe on R day wasn't real keen on hearing about minors and double majors. I think they look at the Army as your second "major". He said it's been done but not real advisable.

It's been said that you "minor in your major" at USMA. Your major usually doesn't matter as much as it would at other schools, and its incredibly tough on your platoon and sports, not to mention grades, to try to double major.

But on that note...I plan to study engineering, probably Aerospace or Mechanical. I would want to get into Army Aviation at this point, though that could change.

You'll be minoring in Engineering of some sort, not Terrorism Studies. Right off of the top of my head, I don't even think that's a course. I could be wrong, though. Anyone know for sure? I've never heard of it.

Guy4Christ: how does taking on a double major create problems with your platoon?

marines4me: it is a minor

http://www.dean.usma.edu/sebpublic/curriccat/fos_details.cfm?fos_maj_cd=TST0N&grad_yr=2008

Interesting... I'll have to find out more about that. From everything I've been told, we're required to minor in Engineering. But then again, no one really focuses on minors. I haven't heard anyone talking about minors there, ever. I think maybe what it turns out to be is you're required to take a certain amount of classes in engineering, so that kind of seems like your minor.

yeah being required to minor in engineering doesn't make any sense... at all

My understanding is that you will take enough engineering classes to be equivalent to a minor. Not quite sure if that's accurate, but that's how it has been described to me.

The basis of the USMA education is that everyone that graduates earns a BS degree, including those that have majored in what would typically be considered a humanity or social science degree at other universities. The core curriculum includes enough math and sciences courses for all students to earn the BS degree. This is different than getting a minor in Engineering.

A quick check of the Dean's web-site revealed the following general statistics on majors:
- 12% focus on basic sciences;
- 33% focus on engineering; and
- 55% focus on humanities or social sciences.

terrorism studies is only a minor, so i dont think it would exist if it wasnt possible to minor outside of your major :) it looks pretty interesting, and a cadet told me the head instructor for it came straight from the white house and knows his stuff.

Double major in International Relations and Economics. This might change because I really want to learn Arabic.

where do you want to focus your IR?

Middle East, I would love to land a job with the State Department after the army. The more I think about it, the more it seems like a good idea to double major in Arabic and IR instead of econ.

Make sure you understand your options and what they will allow you to do at West point with regard to majors. The supe specifically addressed the subject of double majors at the last R day--he was none too positive on the subject.

I understand, but I have a very well to do friend who is a cadet and he told me it's very beneficial to double major if you can handle it, especially in humanities. As far as the minor in engineering, I was told that each cadet minors in some sort of engineering. This could be wrong though. How hard is Arabic? Anyone?

Arabic is a very difficult language to learn. It has a different alphabet and a different set of grammar rules that are very different from ours. If you have studied a Romance language in high school, you will have found vocabulary and sentence structure that are somewhat familiar. With Arabic you will truly start from scratch.

I know it will be difficult to learn, but do you have any experience with it yourself? I would like someone's opinion who went from a romance language in high school and started from scratch at WP. There are very few programs in the US to learn Arabic but I am motivated and would truly like to learn.
