Plans Before Grad School

Hey everyone,
I'm currently in the college of arts and sciences at UVa and will probably major in American Studies with a minor in architecture or something similar. While I have considered a transfer to the UVa school of architecture, I decided I'd much rather get a BA and go back to school for an MArch if I'm still interested in architecture.

I know that oftentimes students take a few years to work in an architectural firm before going to grad school, and I'm wondering how this would work for someone like me, who hasn't done architecture studios or anything. Should I just plan on working other jobs before going back to school or is it possible to be hired in an arch firm without actual design experience?

Thanks!

You might be able to work in the marketing department, or perhaps find a small firm that needs someone for all-around office tasks. However, these days the complexity of software required to effectively operate in a typical office is pretty stagering.

I have been approached by graduating students with no studio experience and could not really figure out how to work them into an office. Even first and second year architecture students are a challenge.
