Just wondering where people see themselves after graduation. I am a recent grad Soc.c/o '10 who graduated with the idea that I would go into teaching or work at a law firm didn't get a position or into the programs I wanted. I then focused my efforts on marketing, human resources and working for an IT company with no avail. And now am in the process of applying for anything-food service jobs, etc.
So, I am wondering what everyone's plans are post-graduation. The Career Center posts data regarding people's placements and work places yet info like this: [https://career.berkeley.edu/Major/Soc.stm][/url] feels real cruel when youre crashing on your friend's couch and applying to Starbucks.Nothing wrong with working there and I grew up with a blue collar work ethic which carried me through community college where I got a perfect 4.0 and onto Berkeley with school, internships, on-campus groups, work etc.. But, I am just wondering what people's expectations are. And how much they see Berkeley as a spring board to a real career with Career Center data.

Excuse my ignorance but what is Soc.c/o? Is that sociology? As far as my plans upon gradation I hope to transition into a career in business. I am an econ major with an emphasis on quantitative courses ie 4 upper division math courses and stats 134. Plus a couple of finance electives. The way I see it I will have to stand out from all the Haas grads and other econ grads with whom I’ll be competing for jobs. There are not many business majors who have complex and real analisys under their belts. I currently work at a hospital and am already in talks with the director of HR trying to line up a job with the finance dept after I graduate. That will be my back up plan if I can’t secure something through on campus recruiting. I’m also going to start cold calling companies for internships for next summer in hopes of landing a job after graduation. If all that fails I will just continue with my current job where I get $45 an hour.

Soc.c/o means Sociology, Class of [2010].

I’m planning to work full-time beginning July or September.

Why even try to land an analyst job that pays less than that if you’re already doing your own thing?

My goal is not to make as much money as possible, although I would like to maximize my income in whatever field I choose to work in. I accept that I will take a pay cut whenever I switch careers, but I think it will be worth it to have a career that I enjoy rather than working for a paycheck.

What do you currently do at the hospital? For $45/hr its probably pretty bad

JavyUCB, out of curiosity, what’s your job at the hospital, and how’d you maneuver your way into the position? 45$ per hour is pretty good for an Econ major who hasn’t graduated yet. Thanks

I’m a stationary engineer. Which is fancy for hospital maintenance. I basically take care of the boilers and building utilities such as emergency generators, medical gas, and plumbing. As far as pay goes in a hospital we are nowhere near the top. I spent 4 years in the coast guard learning the trade.

"…feels real cruel when youre crashing on your friend’s couch and applying to Starbucks."
it sucks… really sucks.

My plans: Go to grad school in engineering and be the next big ****ing thing in [insert field]. I’ll finish my thesis in 2 years. Then I’ll get a tenure track position at a university. I will then single handedly start a whole new field with its own academic journal that I chair.

Later I’ll be a big shot professor whipping grad students like a slave driver. give some talks here and there and consult the president on everything from nukes to the mars colony.

I also plan to have a really hot wife, 5 kids (1 smart, 1 athletic, 1 talented, 1 handsome son, and 1 smoking hot daughter that crushes the hearts of those highschool kids, cuz she ain’t easy). In addition, I will have traveled the world, gone into outer space, and played golf with the Kim Jong Un. Other things that I plan to do are to party with Kanye West, shoot some hoops with Lebron, punk justin beiber, and sleep around the playboy mansion.

Even as time passes, I still won’t forget the time at Berkeley which shaped me into the awesome person I will be. From all the dumb **** ive done, drunken nights, naked runs, girls ive slept with, rejections from girls, protests, A+s, that one class I got a NP in, sleeping in MainStacks, cheeseboard, disappointing football seasons, crossroads, cafe strada, 420 on the glade, joining that christian group/cult, and sleeping in class, I feel that I really grew as a person. Thankfully I’ll be one of those awesome alums that donate 7 figures back to the school despite tuition having raised like 200% in the past 4 yrs.

I’ll eventually grow old and look back at my long and illustrious life as a major contributor to human society. Sitting on my deathbed, with my wife holding my right hand and a bottle of jack in the other, I looked at my kingdom I was finally there ,To sit on my throne as the prince of Bel-air.

Haas/Lib Arts double, senior. Will be working at a large investment bank. Plan to move into venture capital/private equity, and go to business school in a couple years.
