I thought this would be a good discussion on here.

Do you want to follow academia, become a doctor, start your own business etc? What is everyone doing to gain exposure to your interests?

Personally, I'm not sure what I want to do, but I am getting more interested in starting my own idea/company once I graduate. Maybe pursue some research or a graduate degree. Originally in HS, I wanted to become a doctor, but at this point I can't see myself making that commitment. I know for sure I will never be interested in working for the government or some generic desk job.

I’m not sure exactly what my dream job is just yet, but I know for certain it does not involve me being stuck in an office all day. I can’t stand being confined, either physically or mentally.

I also didn’t realize that only HS students were able to discuss career planning. I guess we transfer students should have it all figured out already.

@ocnative I know how you feel. I see the way I think about careers that used to appeal to me, and know as I an getting older, I feel like now is the time to follow something I’m interested in, not something I think I will get me a job or the preconceived notions on the internet.

I started my own company about 3 years ago. Long story short being employed as a lot of perks but it comes with a lot of cons as well. I ended up giving up on my company.

reality will probably be a starving artist or like a waitress/barista/generally unemployed person but dream is something along the lines of fashion journalist or writer but I don’t want to be some unimportant news writer for a local news website I want to do something that actually helps the greater good of people like think carrie bradshaw from sex and the city that would be a dream come true times 100

I want to be a teacher, specifically history teacher. I have always wanted to teach high school, the dream would be college professor

but just recently I have started thinking about teaching elementary(ever since i took a lifespan development class)
I think its a little to late for that option though.

So more than likely I will go on to get my teaching credentials and teach high school. I do want to take a year off after I graduate to save up for the credential program rather than take out more loans.

I was originally going to go for my masters but I think it will be easier to get a high school teaching job than be a professor at a community college.

Last resort work at a museum(yup I’m boring)

doctor! study internal medicine and eventually have my own practice One of my dreams would be to get into any of the UCs medical schools because I want to stay in CA, but that’s probably not going to happen since they’re very difficult to get in! haha

@ucastell Good luck on your journey to MD. I still have looming thoughts about becoming a doctor, but I have commitment issues to fully say I’d go ahead and try for it. I love patient interaction and helping anyone and everyone. If the whole MD wasn’t such a drag I’d probably be committed. If I am older and yearning for medicine, I guess I could always go to physicians assistant school.

@CBS111, thank you! you should totally go for it. Medical School is not easy, and being a doctor is probably one of the toughest careers out there because you deal with life/death situations all the time (depending on specialty), but I honestly think it’s one of the most rewarding careers because you get to make a difference in someone else’s life :). Besides, there are so many different specialties, some take fewer years than others. I personally want to do surgery which takes some extra years, but you can always do something that takes less time, or you can always go to PA school Good luck!

Really want to work in space exploration, so JPL, NASA, or SPACEX if I suceed in CS. I had a bad experience with Physics 1A so my plan B left the building. -_-
