This is going to sound particularly strange, weird and confusing, but let me try regardless.

I'm personally what I consider a "casual" pianist, in that I play because I enjoy it and not really because I want to take it as a profession or for reasons other than for enjoyment. I do not plan to major or minor in Classical Piano at UW, or at least not at the present time, but I may consider taking classes in this area.

With that said, I wanted to ask if the following is/are feasible:

A keyboard in a dorm room and how big or small it might fit. Is it feasible? Does anyone with prior experience have advice?

Access to piano practise rooms: are they reserved for majors/minors?

Pianos at dorm lounges/rooms: Do they exist and are they feasible?

I'm starting my first quarter in Autumn this year, and somehow I cannot shake the disappointment that I wont be able to touch some ivory keys in the extended time I'm staying on campus.

I've done some searching on my own and feedback and responses from CollegeConfidential and other places have given some insight, but I was wondering if any one in UW might share a bit more information.

If worst come to worst, I'll just chuck one in my uncle's house and go there in the weekends :(

A keyboard in the dorm should be doable - especially if you’re planing to use headphones. I decided to live off campus so I can bring my digital piano with me!

Laxaria, I was in the exact same boat as you for keyboard and guitar. I left my keyboard at home when I moved into the dorms. What size is your digital keyboard at home (61, 76, 88 key)? Granted I’m staying in Stevens Court and really have no idea if the other dorms have a similar setup, but I can tell you that there’s more than enough room in my dorm for a keyboard. I just ordered a 61-key and know exactly where I’m gonna put it.

Your keys are fully weighted? Why kind do you have, if you don’t mind my asking?

I have a full size upright piano, but as I’m more or less flying to Seattle I won’t be able to access it once I start there, which pretty much explains why I’m not as fond having anything less. :P

I am not too fond of getting myself a digital keyboard, but it is a compromise I’m slightly willing to take. I’m also not fond of anything less than a full set of 88 keys as I pretty much grew up on them. I could survive with less, but if I can avoid making that compromise I would try. If not, the alternative is getting a cheap one to bring to the dorms and getting a full set of keys and dumping that at a relative’s place and playing it there.

Seeing that I’m unlikely to get into some of the dorms, I’m not exactly sure if there would be space. :(

I’m personally hoping I land a room in the International Community at Hagett for reasons that would be hard to explain. Wonder if I could keep a keyboard in that closet. Hmm…

@ Costax: Haha that’s interesting. Horrible is probably an understatement though; I want a place to practise, not just play pieces I already know. Practising a new piece tends to start from horrific. :(

I don’t think the grands (are they grands?) have a silent pedal, do they?

Edit: How about the piano practise rooms? Are they reserved for piano majors/minors only?

I want to say that Hagget or another dorm hall have pianos.
I play too, I’ll be a freshman and I was just going to wander around until I find one
and I bet the music department has open practice session/open piano rooms or something

I’m going to go ahead and bump this thread, because I have the same question as the OP. I’m a pianist with a pretty crappy piano and I’d love to know where I might be able to play/practice on campus.

Anybody have any idea if I could get use the music department’s facilities without being a major?

You can’t. I went and asked today and you have to be a major.

…With that said, I have half a mind to audition for the piano major (I doubt it’s super selective or anything, to be honest) for the sole purpose of using the practice rooms, and just dropping the major before I graduate.

Terry - Steinway baby grand out in the open. You need to be a Terry resident to use the practice rooms.
McMahon - Practice rooms same as Terry.
Elm - Door to the lobby is locked but once you get in anyone can use the single upright in the practice room.

I signed up for piano major auditions. If you’re a piano major then you can pay $10 per year for piano practice room access.

Pity about the practice rooms. If I find time, I might audition next quarter, though it is a bit of a hassle.

I’m actually taking 3rd party lessons from an excellent teacher in the area, so it’d be a little silly to go through an audition to use their pianos just because of some bureaucratic junk, but such is life.
