Please chance a girl who fell in love with Yale (:

Until a few days ago, I never thought I would find the school that seemed like the "perfect fit." Well, now I have. I've never felt this excited about any school (nope, none of the other Ivies) and I plan on applying SCEA. Heck, I've never been more sure about any decision in my life! I find some Chance threads interesting to read ... would greatly appreciate any comments! Thank you so much for your time!!

PS. You may realized I took the format below from the College Results thread. Decided to do so b/c most people would probably find it easier to read through.

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2220 (730 CR, 760 M, 730 W - 12 E). Will retake in Oct - hoping for high 2200, low 2300.
[] SAT II: 780 Math II, 780 Chem, 760 USH
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4/4.3
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): Top tenth; school doesn't rank.
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): Chem (5), Calc AB (4), USH (5), Bio (5), Calc BC (4; AB subscore 5).
[] Senior Year Course Load: Linear Alg (at local community college), AP Physics B, Anatomy & Physiology, AP Eng Lit, AP French Lang, History Electives, Health.
[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): I know I will receive AP Scholar w/Distinction in the Fall .. but that doesn't count lol. Only award I've won on the national level was this rather noncompetitive poetry contest (Live Poets Society of NJ). I was a topical winner which meant that only 5% of all applicants had their poem published in this anthology. Although it's legitimate association (Eng teacher recommended I join the contest), considering I submitted a poem I wrote in the 8th grade, it's highly suspicious that they just accepted everyone and decided to publish the poems.
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): 12th Grade Class Treasurer, School Newspaper Cohead, 2-time French Honor Society Treasurer. Have been a part of following clubs for 4 years: Mock Trial, School Newspaper, French Club.
[] Research: Had some research experience at a NYC hospital; group was researching sleep apnea in obese children.
[] Sports: Varsity Tennis for 4 years.
[] Job/Work Experience: Work for 3 hrs/wk at mom's alteration store.
[] Volunteer/Community service: Volunteer for 2 hrs/wk at this nursing home for Alzheimer's patients. I've been doing this since I was in 10th grade and don't intend to stop until I go to college.
[] Summer Activities: CTY after 9th, NYLC during 10th, NEYWC (had to submit a writing sample in order to get into this 4 day writing program) during 10th, NYLF/Med after 10th, Intro to Comp class at local community college after 11th.

[/ul]Other[list]
[] Applying for Financial Aid?: Yes
[] Intended Major: Chemical Engineering
[] State (if domestic applicant): Upstate NY
[] School Type: Private
[] Ethnicity: Oriental Asian (sorry, don't want to say whether I'm Chinese, Japanese or Korean)
[] Gender: F
[li] Income Bracket: Little above 30 K
[/li]

I know I don't sound extraordinary but I plan on emphasizing three things in my essays: 1) how I'm enormously inquisitive and spend lots of time researching info just to find answers, 2) how life experiences (sister is childhood cancer survivor, dad basically lives apart) have made me into a fiercely independent yet strong individual and 3) that I've very creative (been writing poems since 8th grade, have won some school writing awards and attending this New England writing conference last year & had a poem published in an anthology).

Once again, I REALLY appreciate your time reading & responding! Hope you all have a great day :)

It’s going to be VERY difficult, but being low-income should definitely push you forward a little bit, maybe consider going through Questbridge, even though I’ve heard a lot of people say it doesn’t help significantly. Your #s are good and your ECs aren’t bad, they just don’t stand out a whole lot. If I were you, I would work incredibly hard on your essays and also try to find some other schools that you really like, just because Yale is SO selective. Good Luck, I may be applying SCEA too if I don’t wimp-out!

Come join our SCEA club :D

But you sound great… the unfortunate thing is that there’s going to be several thousand other equally great applicants. Just do your best and you have as good a chance as any. Good luck!!

I think that your a good candidate. And i mean you definitely have a chance. Your SAT and GPA are in their range. If you can raise the SATI that would help but not much. Your similar to me in that you have a solid application but nothing Amazing like most admits. The key for you will be your essays.

I’ve thought about QB but I’ll need to talk to my counselor again … just to see whether or not it’ll help. Because I actually don’t really want to talk about my life, issues w/dad and the medical issues that plague my family but the essay is the only place to make sure the admissions committee knows.

Thank you for the responses! I’m definitely working on my essays … pouring my heart into them.

Everything looks solid. I expect you’ll be deferred SCEA.

^ it’s because I got 6 wrong on the Writing MC Q. Yeah, pretty dismal I know  At least Writing is the one section I know I’ll raise in Oct! :)

Woops. I edited my post before I read your response; I thought my point was meaningless. But anyways, I’m looking to raise mine too! I didn’t miss any MC but got ripped by ETS and their essay graders with a 4 from each. But that was as a freshman, and I feel was my writing ability has since improved.

Haha, but honestly, SAT scores is the least of my worries right now. But I’m surprised you got an 8 on the essay - I got an 11 when I took the SAT was a 13 year old in 8th grade.

I think the relatively low score was due mainly to the unconscious but protrudingly negative effect of my atrocious handwriting.

Embarrassingly, I actually scored a 9 when I took the test in sixth grade! (But my MC was much lower)
