I am a male rising senior at a small, academically-challenging college prep school in Alabama. I have read some chances before, but have been too embarrassed to put out my info, so bear with me please. I am wanting to apply to: Rice, TCU, Vanderbilt (ED), UNC, USC, and Duke. I have left out some safeties. I realize getting into some of those schools is very difficult, but "You miss 100% of the shots you never take." If I have left some stuff out, just ask me. Here goes nothing:

-GPA is low but definitely rising (huge upward trend: F 3.7 S 3.9 J 4.1)
-Difficulty of courses has been increasing along with my grades. Took only honors course available Freshman year, 2 sophomore year, and Junior year I took 3 Honors, 2 AP, and Mandarin 1 and Spanish 3 (and my elective was my second year of yearbook, with a leadership position there).

-ACT: 32 and most likely a NMSF from PSAT

-Ran for and elected President of Student Body by High School
- VP of Sophomore Class
- Elected Co-Prefect of Fellowship of Christian Athletes
-Member of National Honor Society
- Founder of The Bicycle Club
-Member of International Club (promoting international service, travel, and diplomacy, which is big at my school)
-Member of Fishing Club

Travelled to Spain for 2 weeks as a Foreign Exchange Student to live with a family in Madrid and learn Spanish. Then have hosted a Spaniard for 3 weeks (2 years in a row)

-Have run Cross Country and Track since 7th Grade, Now Captain of Cross Country Team
- Chosen as Most Valuable Runner and made All-State Cross Country team 3x
-Selected as one of 8/100 students in my grade to mentor rising freshmen
-Have job at local Running Store

-Service to Community (200+ Hours)
* Trail Ranger on local Multi-Purpose Athletic Trail - promoting physical fitness
* Provide a summer camp annually to underprivileged inner-city kids, promoting physical activity in the Most Overweight State in Nation

Everything I do is because I love it. I don't just do something because it will look good on a resume, but rather because I am passionate about it and enjoy doing it. I hope you can tell I love the outdoors (Running, Cycling, Swimming, Hiking, Fishing, etc.) and promoting it in an overweight community. I also really enjoy languages, and I plan on becoming fluent in Spanish and Mandarin. I want to be able to speak to most people in the world :)

Oh I forgot. I also have a legacy at Vanderbilt (Mom). My schedule for next year includes:

-AP Physics C
-AP Calculus
-AP English 12
-Economics
-Spanish 5
-Mandarin 2

Thanks Again!

Bumpity Bump Bump. Please help.

c’mon guys - will anyone chance me?

Sure! I do think you have a chance at the schools you listed. Here’s how I would consider them personally:

Rice: match
TCU:match
Vanderbilt (ED): match (with legacy at least)
UNC: reach (OOS is much harder to be accepted with)
USC: reach
Duke: reach

Remember that no one can accurately predict your chances of acceptance to any school, so don’t take mine or anyone else’s posts as definitive. Good luck! :)
