I'm working on my essays right now, and I have a unique passion that I believe will stand out and truly show who I am as a person. I plan on getting a recommendation letter from my history teacher who knows me personally beyond my work as a student. My other letter will probably come from my AP English teacher, as I got the highest mark in her class. In addition, I believe the LOR from my guidance counselor and principal will be nothing short of stellar.

Unfortunately, I do not have any significant honors/awards. I have A LOT of school awards, but no academic awards beyond school. I know this isn't an excuse, but there are very few academic extracurricular opportunities in Canada in comparison to the States.

As an international applicant, the competition will be more rigorous, but I would like to know how you guys think I will fare.

Thank you for your time!!

Please help me out!

no one on here can tell how you’ll fare for admissions accurately, save for an admissions officer. How you present yourself through your application and essays will determine if you get in. That said, you will be a competitive applicant. Given the low acceptance rate, do not plan on getting in - but I would not be surprised if you do. I’ve interviewed tons of kids with 3.9+ GPA coupled with 2300+ profiles from competitive high schools in California. Only 2 of my interviewees have gotten in out of 25 to date, despite a ton of profiles that looked good on paper. It really is a crapshoot.

I agree with Blah–you are absolutely competitive but when you’re dealing with a 16% acceptance rate, there’s just no way to predict.

For the record, when I was applying to colleges back in the day, I made a profile under another account on CC and almost all of my chance predictions that I got were wrong.

First off, I hate your username.

As for chances though, you seem to be on track for JHU, although it never hurts to write great essays!
JHU: high match

But seriously, change that username. :D

Thanks MasterMargarita! @kitts95, I hate my username too  A friend of mine dared me to. He said it would be funny, but in retrospect, I think it has made me look pretty dumb to other CCer’s lol. Unfortunately, I don’t know how to change it. Thanks for the chance!

If I apply ED, would my chances significanlty increase? The ED acceptance rate at JHU is 36%, which is much better than the RD 16%. I am actually very interested in the school’s international studies program.

JHU does not require subject tests yet they recommend applicants take three… Will applicants who take none or less than 3 be at a disadvantage in the admissions process? By the same token, will I be at an advantage since I have 3 or is that the norm?

Also how is admissions for international students? Is it as rigorous as other universities?

Bumpbumpbump

Will applying ED help me a lot with admissions? The ED acceptance rate is 38% which is very high. Is this the same for international applicants? Bump

C’mon someone please answer!!

@Yoloswag2014

Hey i’m also an applicant from Toronto Canada and i applied ED to Johns Hopkins this year as well. I’ve managed to see your stats on the decision release thread for ED. If you see this, could you let me know when you took your SAT subject tests? I took my SAT physics in November (environmental engineering major) and I wasn’t sure if they would arrive on time to the admissions committee (even though the website says it usually does but it’s my first sitting for physics).

In addition, when you said you had 92 average, was that from junior year? My GPA from last year was around 90% and I’m concerned it’s not high enough since I also go to an independent school :stuck_out_tongue:

I appreciate your feedback!

I don’t believe international stats are published, but you can bet it will be significantly lower. Also, RD acceptance was 12% last year for JHU. USNWR advertises 15%, which was the acceptance rate for the 2014 entry cycle, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it drops another 2-3% this cycle given the bump in the rankings.

@NixonDenier would ed help the chances though?

ED should increase chances since schools are always concerned with their matriculation rate, and ED basically guarantees attendance. However, as has been pointed out many times on this forum, thinking that the 30-odd% ED acceptance rate means you have a 20% increase over RD is also not entirely true since the applicant pool for ED does consist of stronger applicants as well as recruited athletes.

As to how much you’ve increased your odds by applying ED, there is no way of knowing since JHU doesn’t publish stats on how students with the same metrics fare in RD vs ED (and even then, metrics don’t capture the entirety of the candidate).

@Yoloswag2014 ooooooooooh! good luck! I’m a current Hopkins freshman (2019), from Vancouver, Canada! my gpa was around there, but i took 5 APs and I had a 35ACT. You’ll probably get in, and if you do (although you’ll find out in 15 hours), shoot me a message! I could help you out with the after-acceptance stuff like course selection, and answer most questions you have
