Please chance me for Pitzer and Scripps?

I will be applying Early Decision for Pitzer and Regular Decision for Scripps. High school senior from Central California.
Weighted GPA: 3.7 (not sure what my unweighted is)
First let me explain my GPA. Sophomore year I had a 3.05 and junior year I had a 4.6. I had a lot of problems going t home my sophomore year; I live/was raised by my grandparents and they were both sick all year, so it was in-and-out of the hospital all the time. It put a lot of stress on me and caused my grades to drop. It was just not a great time in my life. Junior year I pulled it together and got a 4.6. The AP courses I took were AP Lang & Comp, AP Calc AB, AP US History, college-level biology, and college Spanish. Senior year I am taking AP Literature, AP Government, AP Statistics, and college Spanish.
SAT I- 1930 (hopefully I can break 2000 my second time around!)
ECs:
-Founder/President of the first Feminism club at my school
-member of Leo Club (community service club- 2 yrs)
-member of JSA (junior statesmen of america- 4 yrs)
-JSA chapter cabinet (1 yr)
-JSA state cabinet (2 yrs)
-Sunday school assistant for 2 yrs
-Kindergarden teacher at sunday school (1 yr)
-Vice President of Communications on my youth group board (1 yr)
-Vice President of Social Action on regional board of youth group organization (1 yr)
-Jewish summer camp (7 yrs), including a community service/work-based program summer 2013 and a Counselor-In-Training program summer of 2014
-Volunteer at local homeless shelter every weekend
-600+ community service hours
-Piano (10 yrs) including a couple awards/Certificate of Merit

I am not 100% sure of my major yet, but I am considering Political Science or Media Studies.

For my essays, I'm thinking about writing about how my unique household and family situation growing up/feeling trapped and limited at times, led me to look towards the outside/global world and find my passions so I could find a way to be active in my community and make a difference.

What are my chances? I know my GPA is below the average, but will my strong upward grade trend be helpful?

I think pitzer is a better fit than scripps. It is still a bit of a reach, but good luck, you are not hopeless at all.

Really, because I thought Scripps had a higher acceptance rate than Pitzer?

I think you have a decent shot at both. Explain your home situation (I feel for you), and it should work out. Best of luck.
no, competition for Scripps is fierce, it’s the best women’s college west of the Mississippi…

Your counselor should explain in detail your home situation. You may need to provide him/her with a bullet-point list of various circumstances and facts to help him/her.
