(I'm hoping all of this shows my passion for crew)

-I volunteered at local homeless shelters (20hrs)

-This summer: 3 week engineering course at Brown University

Essays:

My essays are very good. One is about growing up with gay parents and the other is about rowing.

Would applying early action help my chances at all at Princeton?... I know it's not early decision and therefore not binding. Thanks for your time!

Your test scores are fine; you don’t need to take them again. I recently interviewed with an admissions officer at an Ivy League who said that if your test scores fall into the range, aka SAT >2150, they don’t hurt your chances and higher scores >2300, don’t really help. In the end, most students applying have high test scores, so they look more to extracurriculars, your high school transcript and especially your essays. I think your passion for rowing will definitely set you apart if your essay can convey that well. Honestly, being from CA doesn’t help your chances, as you are not in the “geographic minority” (like from NC, SC or MI).

I think you have a good chance because you appear to have a passion and follow that passion, and your scores are good. BUT, like everyone else, Princeton should be considered a reach school. If you are really interested, you should contact the crew coach and provide him with your transcript and test scores, as well as your crew accomplishments. If you can get on the radar for athletic recruitment you will get a big advantage. Good luck!

Thanks for the feedback!
