Please chance me for UCLA?

I'm an incoming senior and UCLA is at the top of my list. I'd REALLY like to get in for BizEcon/ Econ.

Background:
Location: Northern California
Ethnicity: Asian-American
Gender: Male
School Type: Public, but very competitive and most graduates go to top schools

Stats:
ACT: Have not taken yet, but I'm projected to get around a 30-31.
SAT II: US History: 730
IB: Economics - 5, Math SL - 6. Took IB Japanese in junior year, will be taking IB Global Studies, IB Environmental Systems 2, IB Theory of Knowledge, and IB English 2 in senior year.
GPA: Unweighted - 3.8, Weighted - 4.52, UC - 4.12
Rank: I had a subpar freshman year and my school is really competitive, so it's a 47/ 355. :</p>

Subjective:
- Key Club (9-12) - All four years with a VP position as a senior. This is probably my most important EC because I'm very passionate about the club. It's the largest club on school and I've gotten 150 (hopefully 200 by the end of this year) community service hours solely from it. We volunteer at things such as soup kitchens, Relay for Lifes, fundraisers for PTP/ cancer, etc. The list goes on.
- Resource Management (11-12) - It's basically ROP and it's mandatory for all IB students at my school. We run chemical testing and help restore the creek running around our city. 100 hours by the end of senior year. I have a leadership position where I help the juniors in my study.
- Student Government (12) - I'm not sure if I can put it on as an EC since it's a class, but you basically have to apply to get in, and there's a lot of work to be done out of class as well. We organize dances, fundraisers, school events, and we are basically one with the school.
- Independent Language School (10) - I was a TA/ teacher for an independent study language school for four hours a week the entire year.
- Conflict Management (11-12) - It's a select group of students chosen at my school to help resolve disputes between two people. They essentially call us in and we work as counselors to help come to a solution.

Hooks:
- Low Income background
- First generation to go into college
- Dad has been out of a job for nine years now

I'm really nervous because in the past, UCLA has been generally unfavorable towards my school. There's been tons of people who have outstanding grades/ ECs, but got rejected from UCLA and got accepted to UCB instead. I don't mind UCB, but I prefer UCLA more. Also, my class rank is very unfavorable.

I say you are borderline for UCLA.

I’m taking the ACT in September and will be retaking it every month until I get the highest score possible.

What kind of score should I be aiming for? Should I be aiming for a 32-33ish?

Lol at retaking ACT every month until you get a higher score…

Did you do poorly on the SATs and is that why you didn’t mention it? Seems odd for someone to take just 1 sat 2 and have no other SAT scores.

I’d say UCLA is a reach for you. Lowish GPA, no concrete test scores, and nothing really stands out to me.

Key club is such an ordinary EC. If that is the highlight of your application/ECs, you are in bad shape. It seems like you just rushed to do these extra curriculars a little too late into your high school career.

Low income/first gen might help you, but these days there are so many people who fit this description. Also since you are Asian, that will work against you.

I’m not saying you have no chance, but it will be an uphill battle. A lot will be based on how well you present yourself on paper.

I didn’t feel like the SAT fit me as well and I liked the ACT much better anyway. I only took the USH exam because I took the class as a soph…

I don’t do things just for the sake of putting it on my college app. I feel like KC is my most important one because I’m REALLY involved in it. I’m not one of those people who just do it at a member level and do a few hours. I’ve gone to international events and conventions all over the state, etc.

I had other ECs such as swim team which I’ve been doing as a freshman, but didn’t put on because you obviously have limited space, and I didn’t accomplish anything special such as getting to states. I had a lot of other stuff that I’ve done in freshman-sophomore year, but I just thought these were more important.

PS -if anything is unclear, feel free to ask! Thanks again!

Come back with a real ACT score and a chance will be more accurate. With your projected score, however, chances seem okay. It’s definitely worth a shot. As for your rank, you’re in luck. The UC’s don’t ask for rank. Even so, your rank isn’t bad.

@Alabama, UCs don’t ask for a rank because they do the ranking and one of the things they look at is if you’re in the top 7 or 9% of your class (forget which it is but it’s around there). Of course it’s not as important for students at competitive schools since they can tell if you got good grades but just didn’t rank high at the school.

In terms of getting into UCLA, I think it’s possible, but as previously stated you’ll have some difficulties and you might want to consider taking the SAT as well.
