PLEASE chance me (hs junior) -> BC, dartmouth, UPenn, Emory, Umich, Uchicago, Duke

I'm not gona waste your time and ask for chances to my safety schools because their called safeties for a reason.. so these are basically my reach/match schools that im currently looking at

I'm still a junior in high school and my freshman and sophmore years weren't too great. I started out my freshman year with all regular classes, and no honors

R= Regular
H = Honors

ENGLISH 9R: 91
Social Study 9R: 93
Math B-1: 91
Earth Science R: 93
Spanish II: 86
PC/A Cert.: 92
Health 9: 86

Sophomore year I moved up to honors, and that had a devastating effect:

English 10H: 86
Social Study 9R: 95
Math B-II H: 85
Biology H: 81 (guess science isnt my thing)
Research Mthds: 88
Spanish III: 88
Career/Finance: 95
Business/Marketing Planning: 94

Cumulative GPA up to this point: 89.3

However, this year (junior) not only has my course load been heavy, but I've shown improvements in all of my subjects. Keep in mind these are only for the 1st two quarters.

AP Eng: A-
AP U.S.: A-
PreCalc H: A
Chemistry R: A
Spanish IV: A
Ceramics: A
College Marketing: A+ (final) ½ year course
Photo: A- (final) ½ year course
Health 11: A+ (final) ½ year course

I'm hoping to get A's/A+'s in my classes in all of my classes by the end of the year, and if i do that, my average will raise to about a 90-91. And I know that senior year grades dont count in the overall GPA/average, but lets just say I continue to excel in my classes and get A's/B+'s in all of them:

AP Calc AB
AP Economics
AP Psych
AP Physics B
English: Creative Writing/Shakespear (½ year Electives)
Advanced Convo Spanish

SAT I: 2250
SAT II: Bio - 660, Math II - 740

EC's:
- Varsity Football Captain
- Varsity Spring/Winter Track Captain
- Volunteer at Hospital 100+ Hours
- Church Volunteer since 8th grade :Youth Group Pres., head of altar serving
- Bolivia Missions trip (summer 2008)
- Volunteer Work at charity organization
- Student Council BCG Representative
- Clubs: Key Club
- Work Experience: Tutoring since 10th grade

Awards:
- School Quality of Life Award
- Church Grant/Scholarship (for active participation)

I know that even if i do get that 90-91 by the end of this year, my GPA will not be as high as it should be but would the fact that I improved tremendously SOMEWHAT "offset" the fact that I didn't do as well freshman/sophomore year? I've really gotten into the right mindset and have gotten serious about my studies.

Also, if any of you could tell me which schools youd recommend me to apply ED/EA, regular pool id really appreciate it

as far as your chances i’d say you may have a slight chance. your ec’s don’t seem to have a focus, and your grades haven’t been horrible but they haven’t been great. however your grades have shown improvement, so thats good.

could you go down the list of schools and give me my chances ?

buummmmmp can any1 help me out

improve on your grades and focus more on activities and you’re fine.

First of all, just FYI, it helps chance-ers if you put the schools that you’re applying to in the body of the topic as well as the title (although I’ve heard that putting them in the title is a good thing)

Secondly, your GPA and ECs are your big hurdles, I think. That being said, colleges really like upward trends, and if you get very strong grades on the mid-year report, it could really help your app. Perhaps if you write your essay about what caused you to get more serious about academics? It would also help if your application demonstrates a strong passion for an EC or a general field. I don’t get a sense of that from this post, but that doesn’t mean that you don’t have a passion, or time to cultivate one more, esp. during this summer.

Anyway:

Boston College-High match to reach. My bet is that this is the easiest to get into on your list, although still pretty hard.

Dartmouth-Reach to slight reach, depending on your improvement GPA wise.

University of Pennsylvania-High reach. Hardest to get into on the list. Express some passion for an EC and you have a better shot.

Emory-I’ve heard admissions are pretty tough here, but this could be a match for you. Your SATs match, and with the rise in GPA, your transcript could fit what they’re looking for. And I could be wrong, but Emory might be one of those highly interest-sensitive schools.

University of Michigan-Not hugely familiar with it, but OOS probably a reach. But I don’t know much about UMich.

University of Chicago-Reach, slightly better chances b\c I think that subjectives count more here, and if you write strong essays that may give you a leg up.

Duke-Reach.

thanks a lot chris so when you say “strong passion for an EC” what exactly do you mean? this summer im most likely attending a pre-college summer program at either UPenn or Georgetown so i hope that helps a bit

and i cant believe i forgot, what would you say about my chances at Georgetown???

BC: reach
Dartmouth: high reach
Upenn: high reach
Emory: high match/reach
Umich: high match/reach
Uchicago: reach
Duke: high reach
Georgetown: reach

As a note, all the kids I know who got into Duke, Dartmouth, and Upenn had near perfect grades in all honors/ap classes all four years of H.S. Besides, they all had stellar ecs + SATs. Since the most important part of your application is your transcript, I am afraid to say that you don’t stand a good chance at these 3 schools in particular.

i hate to say it but you should have taken a harder schedule.

BC- pretty good chance
dartmouth- pretty high reach b/c of lack of AP’s
UPenn- really high reach
Emory- slight reach, but maybe
Umich- pretty good chance
, Uchicago- pretty high reach
Duke- reach
, Georgetown- reach

I agree with person above, Strength of curriculum is pretty important, though being captain of two varsity sports is pretty impressive…I’d say ur pretty much in at BC though

But the B’s in regular classes frosh year won’t help…

yeah i see what your saying thanks guys but any advice on what I could do now to improve my chances at schools like Georgetown/Penn/Dartmouth ?? because those 3 are the schools and most of you have listed them as high reaches

buuuummmmmp
