Chance Me, I'll Chance Back

I'm a rising junior interested in knowing where I stand at this point so that I can plan for the future. I attend a fairly well known private school in New York, and my school doesn't rank its students. I don't need financial aid, but if I could get some merit money that'd be great. I've included my stats below, as well as some schools that I'm interested in applying to and would appreciate it if you could chance me and give me some advice, encouragement, or tips. Thanks in advance.

Freshman GPA: 3.45 (3.33/3.57) {3 honors, 2 CP}
-----> NOTE: I know this is low, but I have a legitimate excuse for this (an immediate family member was battling cancer)
Sophomore GPA: 3.745 (3.66/3.83) {1 AP, 2 honors, 2 CP}
Freshman+Sophomore GPA: 3.6 (3.33/3.57/3.66/3.83)

Junior Year Schedule:
AB Calculus (AP)
US History (AP)
Physics
Spanish 4 (H)
English
Economics
Phys Ed

Senior Year Schedule (Projected):
Art History (AP)
Statistics (AP)
English
Spanish (AP)
Psychology (AP)
Phys Ed

AP Exams (so far):
European History: 4

ACT: 35 (already taken, not a projected score) {36W/35R/35S/33M}
PSAT (sophomore year): 212 {80W/74M/58CR}

Volunteer Work: 200+ hours, very meaningful community service. Can't explain exactly what I did (it would give away my identity), but it was quite significant.

Job Experience: Work as a hockey instructor 30 hours/week during the summer, 5 hours/week during the school year.

Recommendations: One teacher rec will be phenominal, I'm not sure who's going to write the other one yet. Both my boss and the owner of the place where I volunteer have offered to write me letters of recommendation.

Sports: Ice Hockey (our team is one of the best in the state). I've been one of the best players on JV for two years, will either be Varsity or JV captain next year.

Other EC's:
Debate Team- Officer (our team went to the Nationals last year)
School Newspaper- Editor
Student Gov't- Officer

Approximate Percentile: Hard to say, as the school doesn't rank. I'd say around 17-22%. (Our IVY/MIT threshold is around 15%)

...And that's it for my stats. I know that was long, so thanks for taking the time out of your day to read it. Below are schools I'm interested in applying to. I formatted it such a way that it should be pretty easy to chance me.

Your lack of APs is the most detracting factor to me.

I would disagree with some of the earlier posters, I don’t think that many schools will be high reaches. I do agree that your EC’s are lacking, but your GPA sounds to be justified. Also, your ACT score is very nice! Some of those schools are going to be reaches, but if you find one you really like, you can apply ED and hope for the best. Good luck!

Chance me back please?

Most of those are high reaches, but some (NYU (both), U Maryland, U Richmond, BC, Emory) seem attainable.
The lack of EC’s and AP’s kind of detract from the high ACT. The recommendations and community service record should help though.
Good luck!

I disagree with most people on here. I think if it weren’t for your GPA you would have a very solid shot at all of these schools. Nationals in debate and being on the best hockey team in the state are both very impressive. I think all of your stats are very good except your GPA. If you can get your GPA up, you’ll have a good chance at most of them.

Soze was extremely harsh in my opinion. Your achievements make me feel REALLY bad. Sigh. I miss the good old times when I thought advanced classes were enough. I think you’re pretty great for MOST of the colleges you listed. If I had your stats, I would get to work applying for as many I could (in order of “easiest” to get into to hardest).

Wesleyan: NO (This is really mainly because you are from NYC. Wesleyan is very popular with NYC kids. To put in in perspective, two years ago they received over 300 ED applications from NYC and accepted <10).
