Out Of State - Jersey , Male, Asian
Also GPA had upward trend.

Do i have a shot at getting into College Park?

GPA is a little low since you’re out of state (sucks being out of state, the standards are so different), but the SAT scores really help that out.

UMCP from NJ/NY is very very competitive. I am surprised that you have yet to meet anyone from NJ/NY. UMDCP and PSU are probably the most popular OOS univeristies that many kids apply to from NJ/NY.

Our DS’s best friend is from NJ, according to him, the common thought to be accepted from NJ, is that you have to be in the 4.0+ gpa(w) with at least a mid 1200 SAT out of 1600 to be accepted. Yrs and yrs ago UMDCP was viewed as a safety for kids from NJ, those days are long gone. Our DS is an OOS student, in his dorm that he shares with 6 other guys, 4 are OOS, and he had the lowest gpa of 4.17(w), but what helped him was he had a 1390 out of 1600 and a 33 ACT, which is the highest among his friends. The point is the gpa can be overlooked with a strong SAT/ACT.

Remember, this year, UMD has stated that only 25% will be OOS, and that includes international students which they want to quadruple to 600 per class yr in the next few yrs, meaning fewer spots for OOS students from states. Additionally, UMD wants to get away from the image that UMD is filled with OOS only from NJ/NY, hence the competition will be even more difficult if you come from those 2 states.

Finally as someone who lived in NJ for the 1st 25 yrs of her life in Middlesex County the other problem is that the rigor of Edison schools is not viewed from an admissions point of view as strong as other schools like E.B., Monroe, Manalapan and even North Brunswick, which hurts. Add in other schools from the northern counties like Short Hills, Wycoff or Franklin Lakes and it is even more difficult. Part of your transcript will include a biography of the school, such as, how many go to Ivies, 4 yr private, 4 yr public, community and trade. The more that go to Ivies the better your school will be viewed. Now if they are going to St Joes that would make a difference than just Edison public. It will also state your class rank and show how many AP/IB and honor classes available. Thus, if you took the absolute hardest curriculum and pulled a 4.0 w it looks better than only taking a medium curriculum and pulling a 4.2 w.

so a 3.86 unweighted gpa and 1150/1600. i’m from NY.
i wish they accepted the writing section, that brings me up to 1860/2400. but i also have a ton of community service, awards, honor societies, extracurriculars, etc…
pretty much no shot?
my first choice is U of Delaware but i would love to get into UMDCP also.

IMHO you will get into UDEL, but depending on your ECS, you may or may not get into UMDCP due to your SAT, additionally, you can have a 3.86 uw, yet if you have no APs it could hurt you. 3.86 uw, but 5+ APs that are considered hard, and a 4.3 w gpa than the chance of acceptance increases.

You can be in 50 clubs and have 500 hrs in community service, however, it will not carry the same weight as being the treasurer of NHS, Captain of the Soccer Team and a life long member of BSA or GSA. Too many kids think that if they have a ton of clubs on their application that it places them above or on par with those that have few, but are all leadership positions.

I think for NY and NJ, UDEL is now the UMDCP of the 90’s. More and more NJ/NY students are applying to UDEL as their back up for UMD.

UMD has a priority deadline of Nov. 1 and they accept most of their class before that deadline.

So it’s “rolling” but at the same time, your chances are really decreased if you apply after that deadline. Def. send it out as soon as possible.

That said, I think you’re still in, I mean, your GPA is not great but it’s just about average, you’re weighted is high so you’ve clearly taken a lot of AP classes (right?), and your SAT scores are above average. So I would say in even despite missing the priority deadline, though that was also the deadline for special programs/merit awards, so I hope you aren’t expecting any of that ;).

sam - You have a really high GPA so I think that offsets your poor SAT score and you are in as well. Were you on the most challenging class track at your school? I.e. honors/AP/etc.?

UMDCP is not “rolling” in the traditional sense. Rolling means that as they get to your app they will make a decision, there is no traditional release date. UMDCP releases their list only at 2x times, late Jan/Early Feb for those who applied by Nov 1. and April for those that applied anyday after Nov. 2.

GOB will not find out his outcome until April.

UMDCP 11 is correct the bulk of acceptances occur in the Feb list. UMDCP’s Feb list is not binding and that is why the bulk comes out then. They have a view that the late applications are using them as a safety for students that already received their binding results in a negatiive answer.

You’re probably in, although applying later than the “priority date” isn’t in your favor. With your SAT and GPA, you’re in, but it is just a question of how many more OOS offers they will have left after the priority decisions are made. Hey–it is what it is, so you might as well relax about it. Hopefully you have a backup plan…You probably won’t hear anything until April from UMD.
