Hello everyone!

I am a German student who toys with his goal to study at an Ivy college (especially Harvard,Yale,Columbia,Princeton). Currently, I am about to finish my high school career by taking the Abitur examinations, the German equivalent to the US high-school diploma.
As I know that the so-called EC's play an essential role in the admission process I would like you to rate my EC's so that I receive a realistic overview.

Extracurricular activities:
- communal political commitment as member of the JuSos, the youth organization of the Social Democratic Party
- tutoring for pupils from socially disadvantaged families (Turkish,Arabic and slavic families);not only based on educational help as socialization and integration into society are omnipresent
- leader and founder of a network respectively NGO trying to combat the Turkish-Kurdish conflict in Turkey and partially in Germany actively
- sports as fitness, football and basketball sweeten my leisure time; moreover I function as a teacher/coach for socially deprived children and deprived persons
-Prospectively, I toy with the plan of going to the Gaza Strip or Palestine in order to have a clearer picture of the Arab–Israeli conflict respectively its impact on the everyday life of the population there
- prospectively, I could gain an internship at the Turkish/German government

Now I would like to have your evaluation and comment on those points.

Thanking you in anticipation

They’re interesting ECs, but there isn’t much to chance without knowing the scores/grades.

The activities are very impressive and showcase a clear focus, as well as give some decent insight into who you are a person. If you have good academics, you have great shots at top colleges.

First of all I want to thank both of you for having taken time to comment on my EC’s.

@ Cynosuree:
I am aware of the fact that EC’s form only one essential part of the whole application. As I have not taken any SAT respectively subject tests I cannot post any scores. Probably, I will finish my high school career at Germany with an overall Abitur score of 1,3-1,5 (whereas 1,0 is the top grade) ‘sehr gut’. Therefore, I just wanted to get an evaluation of the quality of my EC’s.

@ xquiksilverx:
I would like to know whether it is necessary to put any evidence of those activities into the application form. If yes, this would be problematic as my EC’s basically are individually done.

General question:
Could you please give me an average SAT I and subject test score promising good chances at the admission process of those top colleges? Is there any ‘softer’ score cut for future international? students

No one there to give reply to my questions?

You don’t need to put evidence on your application. There is a rare chance they will ask you for evidence at which point you would have to send something in (for example, someone signing off that you did it), but this is extremely rare and is generally only asked for if you, for instance, won a very large competition or something.

There is no specific cut-off for SAT scores, but you will in general need at minimum 2250+ for the SAT I (2300+ would be better) and over 750 for the subject tests. Of course, these numbers vary from case to case and won’t guarantee admission, but they’re good guidelines to follow in general.

I would like to put another question:

Is it generally possible to compensate a SAT score below 2000 with strong EC’s or is it rather seen as unrealistic?

Your chance won’t be nonexistent, but the Ivies (and other top colleges) have many, many candidates with both high SAT scores and excellent extracurriculars, so you should do your best to get your SAT score within range. If you have difficulty with the SAT, you can always consider the ACT.

Could I gain a boost in admission process by mentioning that I am Turkish-German (born Germany, both parents Turkish) as the number of Turkish-Germans entering university here is significantly low? Moreover I am the first in my family to finish highschool and enter a college/university?
Probably, I am among the top foreign students in Berlin/Germany as my principal stated?

Considering the given points would you rather see me as a strong application (do not consider test score, just that)?

Being international won’t help you if you’re still Caucasian. Being first generation to college will give you a boost, though. If it wasn’t for your test scores, you would be a very strong applicant, but the scores combined with your international status bring your chances down.

Wow, thank you xquiksilverx for presenting your evaluation.
So I will have to do the best with my test scores!

Currently, I am kind of paralyzed as you certify strong chances for me for HYP.
Do you have any further,first-hand experience with the admission process or are you referring to the CC site as a source (just as I am interested in)?

your ECs are clearly impressive by German standards (most high school students in Germany do less than you) but there are gazillions of applicants with much stronger ECs applying to Ivies each year, so you still need to demonstrate outstanding achievement in other areas, such as high SAT scores

being first-generation college student is definitely a +++
