Please chance!!

Hey guys,

I know that it’s stupid to do these because nothing is guaranteed, but it just feels better to hear other people give their opinions.

I am a white, female high school junior attending a parochial school, though I am not affiliated with any particular religion.

I have a weighted gpa of 4.5 (Our school requires that every student take four units of theology in order to graduate, and there is no way to take an honors class there, which brings this down a little)

ACT: 32 (math 29, english 35, science 31, reading 33)

Freshman classes: Art 1, Honors English 1, Honors Geometry, Spanish 2, Honors Modern World History, Honors Pre-Calc, Honors Bio, Theology 1

Sophomore Classes: AP Calc AB, AP Calc BC, Honors Chem, AP Seminar (part of AP Capstone diploma- this class and program is newer), Microeconomics, Theology 2, AP Psych, Spanish 3, Fashions (like a sewing class- learning how to use a machine and whatnot)

Junior Classes: Elem. Multivariable Calc (at local university, University of Toledo), AP Lang and Comp, AP Chem, Theology 3, Personal finance (grad requirement), AP Gov, American History, Honors Spanish 4

Don’t know what my senior classes will be yet, since I’m only a junior

EXTRACURRICULARS

-140+ hours of volunteering at local hospital during the summers
-Summer after freshman year: Stanford pre-collegiate, group theory
-Club volleyball: since I was 9, played on top-level team. Practice was 2-3 hrs 3 times a week with about 10 2-5 day tournaments throughout the season. Season usually lasted from January until June.
-High school volleyball: since freshman year, we were a highly ranked team nationally and played in the state and regional finals, though our most recent state title was won in 2010, before I entered high school.
NOTE ABOUT VOLLEYBALL: Unfortunately, due to serious injury, I have been rendered unable to continue playing, which eliminated the possibility of playing in college, which is something that was being seriously considered at the D1 level. This happened at around the end of my junior year high school season. I have since started to train for a bike race and a 5k (these activities aren’t affected by my ankle injury, but I can’t play sports involving jumping), which involves approx. 1 hr of training 4-5/7 days per week.
-House work/babysitting: since my mom died in November 2015, my responsibilities at home have increased enough to the point that it should be mentioned on this list. In addition to increased responsibility to work around the home with my dad, I babysit and serve as a method of transportation for my 3 younger siblings, who are 14, 9, and 5.
-Ambassador society: I am in a leadership position in this organization. We help run programs like open houses and tours for prospective students. In a way, we are an arm of the school admissions team.
-Model UN: This is my first year participating in this. I am representing Venezuela this year and am writing papers and preparing research for the conference, which lasts for 3 days and is held in March.
-Novel: I am currently writing a novel. I began to write in late October and am on track to finish by early spring next year (March??) I will submit it to various agents for publishing when it is complete.

I plan on majoring in either classics or comparative lit in college, though I am leaning more towards classics.

The schools to which I plan to apply are:
Cornell, Dartmouth, Princeton (legacy), Stanford, Tulane, U Chicago, U of Michigan, UCSB

Thanks again!!

Cornell: Accepted or Waitlisted
Dartmouth: Accepted
Princeton: Waitlisted
Stanford: Rejected
Tulane: Accepted
U Chicago: Rejected
U of Michigan: Accepted (sister goes there, 32 act, had 4.5 GPA)
UCSB: Accepted

Good Luck!

All the Ivies plus Stanford and Chicago are reaches for everyone despite the above chancers optimistic guesses.

You are smack in the middle of Tulane’s stats so it’s a toss-up there. Show lots of interest, and build on the Venezuela-UN connection, if that is something you are genuinely interested in, as Tulane has tremendous Latin American Studies offerings. Try to be creative and propose a major or set of majors that really build on your interests and the strength of the school. Research the faculty and see if there’s someone you’d like to work with on research. Cite your community service interests and how you would direct them in New Orleans. It is specific information like that that gets applicants from the deferred to the admitted pile. Best of luck to you!

Thanks!
