You have a shot. Your stats are pretty typical of in-state applicants. You do not have a great chance mind you...I would not be shocked if you were rejected...but I would not be surprised if you were accepted either. Good luck and keep us posted.

If you're in-state, you're basically in! The admit rate for UM is quite high (about the same as UC-Irvine 55-60%), and very much in your favor :) Good luck.

Golubb, mean SAT at Irvine is 1190...at Michigan, it is 1310. I agree that there isn't a big difference between 1190 and 1310, but it is still a difference. And the mean unweighed GPA is 3.8. So the OP has a chance...but he is not a shoe in. I would say the OP has a 50/50 chance of getting in.

Take it as a rule Golubb, for in-staters, to be a shoe in, one needs at least a 3.8 unweighed GPA, taking several AP classes, a top 5% class rank and a 1400+ on the SAT. For out of staters, one needs significantly higher scores and grades.

In staters with SAT scores between 1250-1350 and unweighed GPAs between 3.5 and 3.7 have a 50/50 chance of getting in. That's where the OP falls.

In staters with unweighed GPAs under 3.4 and SAT scores under 1200 have virtually no chance of getting in.

"Take it as a rule Golubb, for in-staters, to be a shoe in, one needs at least a 3.8 unweighed GPA, taking several AP classes, a top 5% class rank and a 1400+ on the SAT"

Not really!! Only 65% of UMAA students are in the top 10%, so the OP's GPA is very good! Also, the SAT is very typical of an UMAA student. Plus, the in-state status give a much bigger boost.

Remember, UMAA has a 55-60% accept rate...the only students that get rejected are the lower end of the numbers curve...the OP is clearly in a very good position. I'd venture that he has a 80-90% chance of acceptance because of his decent scores.

Look at the link below to see how UMAA admits students..they're quite lenient.

<a href="http://www.michiganreview.com/adminguide.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.michiganreview.com/adminguide.html</a></p>

Not sure where you got that, but, 90% of the UMich studens were ranked in top 10%, statistic from Princeton Review..And average GPA is 3.72

SAT range is around 1210-1400

I'd say he has a decent chance, being instate

I have just received my GCE'O' Level results and got 7A1, 3A2 and 1B3. My SATI is 1410 (V650, M760), SATII writing 710, Physics 700 & MathsIC 750. Excellent DCs and recommendations. Umich confirmed in Sep 04 that my apllication was recieved but in end Oct 04 they sent letter asking me to fax GEC "o" Level results before they can reach a decision. Results was out on 28 Feb 05, I have faxed and Fedex certified copied to them which were received on 2 Mar 05. When I called the admission officer on 3 Mar 05, I was disappointed that he said I will need to wait another 12 to 14 weeks for an answer. What's the point of rolling admission then as I sent my application in early Sep 04? What are my chances and is there any way I could expediate it. Could you also tell me what my results will translate to in terms of Umich GPA. Thanks

No Golubb, you are the one who is incorrect...and it is time you start respecting Michigan. For starters, you are providing a link dated 2001. Like most schools, Michigan has become significantly more selective over the years. Last year, 90% of Michigan's entering freshman class graduated in the top 10% of their HS class. 70% graduate in the top 5% of their HS class. Furthermore, you were saying that the OP was "in". I was merely saying that the OP had a chance, but not a great one.

Another thing, it is true that Michigan accepts 50%-60% of applicants. But you ignore a simple fact. A significant chunk of IN-STATE applicants to Michigan have 3.8+ unweighed GPAs, are ranked in the top 5% of their HS class and have 1400+ on their SAT. Those are the ones who get accepted with at close to a 100% rate. But to the rest, (students with less than 3.6 unweighed GPAs and SATs under 1300, as well as for out of state applicants) acceptance rates are closer to 30%-50%...and again, there are standards to take into account. And like I saids, students with GPAs under 3.4 and SATs under 1200 have virtually no chance of getting in.

Michy, you would be considered a 3.8+ students...and with your 1410 on the SAT, I would say your chances of getting in are excellent. I would not worry about the delay. Michigan gets thousands of applicants your credentials annually...and they accept many of them. But you have to be patient. Keep us posted and good luck.

"No Golubb, you are the one who is incorrect...and it is time you start respecting Michigan."

I do have respect for UMAA! I'm just being realistic about the OP's chances of getting into Michigan. With a 50-60% accept rate, it is easier to be accepted than rejected for most applicants! The OP is much better than the average student, so he has an excellent chance of getting into UMAA.

golubb lives in the past. He insists on quoting outdated college stats to justify his points...despite being informed in other threads. The stats he quoted here are from 2002 USNWR, and the link he posted is "2001 Guidelines". Most people on this board are aware that admission standards have changed drastically in the last few years.

90% of last year's freshman class are ranked in the top 10%, not 65%. You can look it up on USNWR or PrincetonReview. And if you don't like USNWR, go to Michigan's own website (<a href="http://www.admissions.umich.edu/fastfacts.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.admissions.umich.edu/fastfacts.html</a>) for the current profile:

Mid-50% of the freshman class:
.. high school GPA of 3.6-3.9 (unweighted; 10th/11th grades)
.. 24.3% with 4.0
.. 48.2% with 3.90 or higher
.. SAT I total of 1230-1390

To pp000441,
I think you definitely have a shot. You do have a few things going for you: being in-state, the first in your family to go to college, good English scores as a second language ... and a rather impressive list of extracurricular activities.

Your chance would be much better had you applied earlier. At this stage, you are competing with a much larger pool of applicants with similar stats for the remaining spaces.

michy88,
I presume you are international? You are competing with the other international applicants in the same pool. The adcoms have problem comparing grades from different school systems between countries, and sometimes even within the same country. So they tend to put more weight on national exams like the GCE or IB.

In your case, even though your application was complete last October, the adcoms might have problem making a decision with just your grades and SAT scores. Thus it is like you were 'deferred' pending your GCE O-Level results.

I don't think you have to wait another 12 to 14 weeks. You will probably hear in early April. Your GCE and SAT scores are above the line. And assuming your other credentials are just as decent, I like your chance.

Just curious. How come you took your GCE O-Level so late ... you must be at least in the 12th grades now?

GoBlue81
No, I am in Grade 11, took 'O' in Nov 04 and results recieved in Feb 05.

I see. So you are applying for Winter 2006?

Alexandre
Still have not heard from Umich, getting worried. Shd I call or email admission office?

Michy, I am confused about something. You took your O Level exams in 11th grade and are now getting your high school diploma. I am not sure what grade you are in.

I took O level last year (10th grade) Currently in 11 th grade. I have friends who went to Umich after O levels. I wish to go Umich too after O level, but while waiting for the decision I am in 11 grade.

Alexandre
Please advise, should I call or email admission office. Still anxious.

Michy,
Technically your application was not complete until March 2nd ... the date U-M received your O-Level results. As you are in the international pool, I don't think they can make a decision without seeing your O-Level results.

There is no harm in calling admissions again for your status as you did submit your application way back in September. Suggest you call them instead of e-mail as they typically get a lot of e-mails at this time of the year.

Btw, how come you are still in 11th grade after taking your O-Level last Nov? Are you from Singapore? I thought you have to finish 11th grade before taking your O-Level, and then 2 more years before A-Level? And I am surprised that your friend got into U-M after completing only the 10th grade.
