Excerpt:
If we valued honesty, we would be willing to risk our jobs to become whistleblowers and tell truths that our employers did not want revealed. If we valued success, we would give up our free time in order to excel in a subject or sport. In other words, the sacrifices we are willing to make reveal what we care about the most.

Assignment:
Can what we value be determined only by what we sacrifice? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.

ESSAY:

Sacrifice does incontrovertibly show what we value the most. It requires courage and determination. Sacrifice takes place when we set aside our personal interests for the greater good. It is an altruistic act which reflects our true inner self because we have nothing to personally gain from it and no other motivation to drive us than to achieve whatever we value the most.

Let us consider the sacrifices done by Gandhi, who is an epitome of selflessness. Gandhi was from a wealthy family. He received quality education in law and traveled to different places. He could easily have led a luxurious lifestyle. But he chose to return to India, his country which was under an oppressive British rule. He gave up his comfortable lifestyle and embraced a life filled with hardships and danger for the greater good of his country. He single handedly organized protest marches, traveled to different parts of the country to unify people, boycotted British goods, and even went to prison in his many attempts to free India. Also at that period, people in India often discriminated each other on the basis of profession. This made it difficult for different social groups to participate in mass movements. Gandhi went to all lengths to stop the discrimination; he even cleaned toilets himself in order to dignify the work of a sweeper. The betterment of his country was more important to Gandhi than his personal wellbeing.

Also by recounting an anecdote from my life, I am going to demonstrate the significance of sacrifice. My friend happened to be critically ill. Unfortunately, my exams were approaching at the time. But I decided to give up my study time to spend time with my friend at the hospital and support him when he needed me most. This sacrifice shows that I value loyalty more than my personal gain. I did not expect anything in return for my actions. I decided to do what I did because I wanted to fulfill my duty as a true friend.

Sacrifice involves giving up something even if nothing lies in store for us. It is a foolproof way which shows us what we value the most, because we are willing to let go of other things for that one particular thing. The world has changed through out the pages of history and is still changing because people have had the determination to give up their time and effort for the betterment of others. Therefore, I believe that what we value the most is demonstrated by sacrifice
