Please help a shy kid with college list (31 ACT, looking for small universities and LACs).

Has he considered Wofford? I don’t know tons about this school but hAve known a couple of kids who absolutely bloomed there. I liked the suggestions up thread for Dickinson and F&M. I would also suggest Denison and wooster. All but F&M have merit scholarships, and with his stats, he is likely to get them.

He is likely to be competitive at the schools listed above, but they don’t offer merit.

Another vote for Dickinson.

Check out Berry College in Rome GA. Lacrosse team Div 3 may be relatively new.

Great vibe on campus, enough students to find your tribe. And 26,000 acres to enjoy if you need to get away from people and recharge.

My D got great merit there with a 31 ACT.

Students take off to Chattanooga and Atlanta to get their city fix.

Denison would not probably not be an option for someone serious about continuing to play lax as its men’s team is highly ranked and competitive recruiting. I think Dickinson would likely be similar in that regard. Other midwest schools like Wooster, Beloit, Lawrence, Kalamazoo, Earlham might be options for merit for stats in that range.

There are about a million small LACs in PA.

@preppedparent, all of the school you listed in post #19 will either be a reach or a super reach with the OP’s profile unless he is being actively recruited.

Another consideration is that many top 50 LACs will not have accounting per se as a dedicated major or program – they will have CS and may have data analytics or other kind of statistics/mathy (sorry, not a STEM person) program, but many will not have an accounting program.

Students still get into reach and super reach schools.

@preppedparent, an unhooked applicant with OP’s profile simply isn’t likely to get into USNWR # 1-30 schools - if OP is being recruited that’s a hook and a likely game changer.

Does lighting strike sure, but as a 31 ACT is in bottom 25% at these schools it is very, very unlikely…Much better to have the OP put together a realistic list of schools with those in the USNWR # 30-50 ranking being much more likely reaches.

@Midwestmomofboys, as noted on the attached, students that graduate from top LAC’s with Economics degrees, as none offer Business degrees, do just fine with MBA admissions - https://www.■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■/infographics/top-feeders-mba-programs

A wild thought: Bishops university in Quebec has a lacrosse team, as do Brock and Carleton and Trent in Ontario. His GPA would be just about right (probably just put him in the top 1/2, which in Canada means that you are in). Bishops is an English university in a bilingual town, the rest are of course English Universities in the English part of Canada. ECs outside of lacrosse won’t be needed (nor considered), and costs will be reasonable. At least Bishops is test-optional for applicants from the US, I am not sure about the others.

@Chembiodad – I was responding to the OP’s statement that the student could be interested in undergrad major in accounting – which is not a major offered at many top 50 LACs, rather than addressing MBA admissions, where of course LAC students are highly competitive.

@Midwestmomofboys, understand, but as accounting services will likely be provided by robots in the future it’s probably not a long term career opportunity…

These college majors are the most robot-resistant http://www.cnbc.com/2017/04/21/these-college-majors-are-the-most-robot-resistant.html

“The hardest activities to automate with currently available technologies are those that involve managing and developing people (9 percent automation potential) or that apply expertise to decision making, planning, or creative work (18 percent). These activities, often characterized as knowledge work, can be as varied as coding software, creating menus, or writing promotional materials. For now, computers do an excellent job with very well-defined activities, such as optimizing trucking routes, but humans still need to determine the proper goals, interpret results, or provide commonsense checks for solutions. The importance of human interaction is evident in two sectors that, so far, have a relatively low technical potential for automation: healthcare and education.”

Good points about an accounting major @Chembiodad and about it not being offered at most LAcs @Midwestmomofboys . He enjoyed his AP stats class this year so I think stats is a good possibility for him. He also likes history and maybe gov, but he really has no idea what kind of job he wants. That is certainly ok for now, but it does seem he has a strength in math.

@preppedparent - I like your optimism, but I do think those great schools you suggested are a bit too reachy for him. Since he’s interested in BC and UNC-CH, he may put those in his reach category once he gets farther in the process, and maybe add a small school reach. Even though his grades and scores are good, I’m concerned about his low reading score, his ability to write a strong essay and low number of ECs besides lacrosse.

Regarding lacrosse, again I think it is something he would like to do at the club level. He is definitely talented enough to play for many division 3 teams, but since it is not that important to him, they never really pursued it. I have asked whether they would want to pursue it in order to have a better chance at a higher ranked school, but I am not sure if it’s too late for that. I think we’ll mainly just focus on finding the right college for him and looking at the club team options.

I’m guessing he won’t go for Canada, but that was a good idea.
Thanks all for the helpful suggestions!

My daughter is also super shy, and so we are limiting the search to small LACs with small class sizes. We were impressed with Dickinson - a college that wasn’t on my radar initially. Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) might be a good fit. They have a major in applied mathematics that might suit him.

UNC-CH OOS is a super reach since they only take 18% from OOS. But you can always try.

Canadian lacrosse is very competitive. It is the national sport (summer) of Canada.

It sounds like this student isn’t interested in using lacrosse to be recruited and perhaps have a hook for admissions. He knows there is no way he’s playing lacrosse at UNC or Duke, but a few of the schools he’s listed have Club lax (BC, Elon) and those are very high level teams. It doesn’t help him with a hook to get in, but the activity is there should he want to continue playing.

@twoinanddone, agree on the high level of club lacrosse at schools such as BC.

Good to know about club lacrosse @twoinanddone and @Chembiodad.
Any other suggestions of schools with selectivity somewhere between Elon and BC?

Well that’s a fairly wide berth so your DS should have lots of options as the decision shouldn’t be based on lax unless it’s a scholarship need, and then that’s a very, very valid reason for many in order to be able to afford to attend college.

@twoinanddone, agree on the Canadian lax as Hill Academy is an amazing HS team.
