Help With College List

HI-- Looking for help in putting together a list of schools for my DC to look at.

GPA 3.8 UW (no weighting)
31-32 ACT
good ECs but not starting non-profits or curing cancers…

DC wants not too big not too small (no, I don’t really know what that means…we are open), mid-Atlantic or northeast school, strong in liberal arts/humanities.

Where have your similar kids gotten IN? Just trying to make a reasonable list

thanks

Similar stats and similar interests- got into UVM, UMass, UConn, Syracuse, Villanova

Let us know where you live (state) and your financial restrictions before we all get creative… “reasonable list” means what you can afford, right?

Any particular major? Preference for urban, suburban or rural? Merit aid required?

LAC or Universities, or both?

Open to larger LACs and universities. Cost not an issue.

Putting in the criterion, 100% matches are:
Wesleyan U (CT)
Loyola U (MD)
Boston C
Brandeis
Holy Cross (MA)
Tufts
Colgate
Hofstra
U Rochester
Siena
Skidmore
Duke
Wake Forest (I personally view WF as more of a biz/STEM, but that’s just me)
Bucknell
Carnegie Mellon
Lehigh
Villanova
William and Mary (a personal fave)
Fordham
U Richmond
Georgetown
Elon

There are also a ton of others in the 2,000-2,900 range, as well as more that are bigger than these.

Price no factor? Drive vs. fly a factor? Any idea of major or field of focus, or undecided? Greek or not? Sports fan, or not? What are her passions re: EC - theater? maybe playing intramural sports?

Happy to help, but I’d just be tossing you random Liberal Arts Colleges that I have come to like after researching for my daughter. (My son quickly realized he strongly did not want a LAC, so none of his schools would likely interest your DC)

To whom does “DC” refer ? Dear child ? Cousin ? Or ?

Regardless, there is too little information / parameters set in order to offer meaningful suggestions.

Ok-- more info on Dear child.

Price no issue.
Anywhere in Mid-Atlantic/Northeast US.
Lots of interests. Will probably study something in liberal arts-- not engineering or business.
LGBT friendly
Not too tiny
Sports don’t matter but want somewhere kids have some school spirit
not overwhelming greek
good art/theater/music etc a plus
some sort of town/city as opposed to rural

thanks

Vassar College satisfies some of your wants.

School spirit is tough to define beyond sports. Wesleyan University might be an option. Skidmore College.

Although not in your preferred geographical region, Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota is worth a look.

To get you started, if your DC just wants to start looking at random good LAC schools to help create their own list:

Skidmore College in Saratoga Spring, NY (my D is there, loving it. Theater major and about to declare as Classics double major.)

CT College, New London, CT

Muhlenberg College - Allentown, PA

Wesleyan - Middletown, CT

Oberlin Coll - Oberlin, OH (Ohio isn’t mid-Atlantic or NE, but maybe worth looking at online)

Boston Coll - Boston, MA

U. of Rochester - Rochester, NY

St. Lawrence U - Canton, NY

Haverford Coll - Haverford, PA

Colgate U - Hamilton, NY

Bates College - Lewiston, ME

Middlebury Coll - Middlebury, VT

Tufts U - Medford, MA

Also, definitely encourage your DC to retake the ACT to try to get the composite score up, or at least improve the superscore for colleges that calculate it. It’s a pain, but if DC can do lots of practice tests in a timed, realistic setting, and then carefully review any they guessed at or missed, they WILL improve their score over time. The questions start to become very familiar and that’s when the score will go up. Not a fun way to spend a weekend afternoon, but if they do it to “earn” something fun (video games for my son, for example) they can manage to get it done. A higher score feels very good. (FWIW, I could not convince my son (current HS senior) to retake the ACT, but my D took it three times and improved each time.)

Good luck to your family with all this! I’m personally really, really looking forward to it being over, since we’re going through this for the 2nd time in 2 years!

I can confidently state that Skidmore is very LGBT friendly. That was an important factor for my D, although she is not as involved as she was in HS. I get the impression it’s more a normal part of being without having to actively promote or support it at Skidmore. One parent’s impression.

No Greek at Skidmore, another plus for my D.

Not really very school spirited in terms of sports, but that’s my D. I do know that there are a lot of D3 athletes in various sports (no football) so among those that play, perhaps there is more spirit, but it’s not at all like a Duke.

UoRochester sounds like it may be a worth a good look since it checks a lot of the boxes you’ve added.

Thanks all-- Tufts, Skidmore, Wesleyan, URochester on list. Also BU and UVM. Tufts would obviously be a reach.

Middlebury and some of the others recommended may be too far from cities/towns for my child…

And yes, DC will take ACT/SAT again, but realistically 31-32 is where we may end up

Check out Ithaca

I would say that chaosparent23 just gave you a really good list that I totally agree with. Start with those. Then look for colleges that are similar to each one of these to find more.

@megan12: That list of schools really misses the mark if you read OP’s other thread on this issue.

@Publisher-- interested to know which ones you think do not fit our needs. Some of these seem like they met all the criteria. would love input.

One of your stated requirements in the other thread was LGBT friendly. Also, I believe that you stated a preference for no engineering and business or, at least, a lack of interest in those areas.

The best way to get appropriate comments is to share your parameters listed in the other thread on this thread.

I think that Bucknell, Colgate, Villanova, BC, Holy Cross, Wake Forest, CMU, Lehigh, Richmond & Duke are not fits. Also Hofstra doesn’t seem like a fit. So, in my opinion, eleven (11) of the twenty two (22) listed schools do not meet your stated preferences.
