Please help chance/match me! (Junior)

Hey everyone I was just wondering what kind of schools would be good matches for me. I believe I’m an average student, not great, but not bad either. I go to a fairly competitive public high school in Northern Virginia.

-White male, middle/upper middle class

-UW GPA: Around a 3.45-3.50 (I have calculated it online, school doesn’t give unweighted)
-Weighted GPA: 3.95 (5 scale)
-SAT: 1120 (not good at all, fortunately I have plenty of time to study and practice! I will retake when corona is done.)
-AP Scores: AP World History (4)

AP Classes:
10th- AP World History
11th- AP Human Geography, AP US History
12th (plan, could change)- AP German, AP Government, AP Environmental, AP Macro/micro

Junior year courses- precalculus, honors chem, AP US, AP Human geo, econ/pfin, German 5 honors, honors english

Senior year courses (plan)- CIS, AP’s mentioned above (german, gov, enviro, econ), DE english (potentially academic), Calculus, early release
(might switch out of ap environmental, I’m not sure yet)

EC’s:
-Volunteer swim coach-9th grade summer
-Summer swim coach (job) (3 summers if there is a season this summer, 2 if not)
-Swim lessons to kids
-PVS scholar athlete (our swim zone gives a list of kids with certain times and gpa)
-Stocks/investments club founder
-German club, will run for officer next year
-German NHS, tutoring involved
-NHS
-9th, 10th, 11th grade varsity swim
-Varsity swim captain (11th)
-Volunteer at local church

-Finally, intended major: Accounting and/or finance

I know that I don’t have the academic stats for any top universities or LAC’s, but could anyone give any potential matches/slight reaches that are good for good business/econ? I am open to anything public or private in the Mid-Atlantic region/Northeast. I hope you can help!

What kind of schools are you interested in, big 10? Small LAC?
What about finances? We can’t really help until we know if you need scholarships, merit, etc?

@NYC2018nyc

Yeah, I understand what you’re saying. I would probably not get a ton of need money at most schools, so I would probably be on the look out for merit money and scholarships, if that gives any insight into my financial situation. I would mostly be interested in mid size schools, maybe a little smaller, maybe a little larger. (About 3500-15,000)

You could get recruited for swimming. Do you think you are good enough to get recruited by colleges?

@popcornboy123

Yeah I am currently looking at some low d1 schools and some mid-upper d3 schools (when I say “low or mid-upper”, I mean how fast the teams are.) The problem is some of the schools I am looking at, mostly d3, want you to have certain academics. I am also just looking for some academic matches in case I don’t want to swim.

What’s your budget?

Elon, Marist, Catholic University, Loyola Maryland.

@austinmshauri

Probably lower than 56k for tuition.

@MAmom111

Thank you for the help! Do you know how those schools are typically with merit?

All you need is one good test score and you could easily get into NESCAC or prestigious d3 school through recruitment (or higher if you are good enough at swimming)

although, most schools going test optional next year could change that

@k789bh

Thanks for the encouraging words, I don’t know if it was meant to be encouraging lol, but thanks. How do you see the test optional “movement” affecting recruiting?

It could really mean:

  1. if your score isn’t great don’t sweat it and don’t include it in the app; but you would need to maintain or keep improving grades
    2)if your score is great you can slack on grades (though wouldn’t recommend it lol)

Summary: get good grades and you’ll be fine

@Dawert26

Ok. I would ideally want at least a 4.0 if I don’t get another opportunity to test. Thanks!

I can tell you work very hard with your extracurriculars and your work load, and that will stand out to the admissions guys more than grades. Do your best with the grades, as always, is all I’d recommend. You’ll have little trouble getting into the schools other people have recommended. Always apply to a good mix of safety, fit, and reach though! :slight_smile:

@Dawert26

Hey, thanks for that! I am always looking to improve my gpa, like you have been saying. Just out of curiosity, what schools would you say could be matches?
