how badly are my chances ruined of getting into a good school like UNC Chapel Hill, UCLA, Duke, Wake Forest, with a d in apcalc? I still have 1 more test, an extra credit opportunity, and the final left so there is time to raise my grade but nothing i have done has worked! I study ridiculously hard, harder than my friends, yet i still have the lowest grade out of all of them. Please help. Any advice to bring my grade up to a C? And how bad does a C hurt my chances of getting into a good college?
Would you be majoring in a STEM field? Are your other grades mostly or all As? You’re not totally doomed at any of the schools you mentioned if the answers to those questions are no and yes, respectively. But it’s not a good look, and it will reduce your chances there.
Yes, of course it will hurt your chances a little but don’t get too discouraged. I got a C in one of my classes sophomore year and that motivated me to get straight A’s the rest of my high school career. I even ended with a gpa above 4.0, getting into most UC’s. Just make sure you learn from your mistakes, get good grades next semester, and DO WELL ON THE AP TEST TO REDEEM YOURSELF.
Good luck and don’t stress too much!
Most teachers at my school give you an A both semesters if you get a 5 on the AP test ask your teacher if they can do that.
^That’s a very rare case because of several reasons. Don’t bank on what @Sterny16 said.
First, that’s violating general grading policy, unless it is specifically written that the teacher will bump up the grade in such cases in the syllabus. (It will be also a very cheap way to earn grade.)
Second, AP exam scores come out in mid-July, and by then, the grading book will be closed.
Are you a Junior or Senior?
Which calculus class are you taking? If you are taking AB then this is more serious than if you are taking BC (especially without taking AB first). It is serious either way, but if you show significant improvement in the next semester, it looks much better. I agree with @HardOREasy - I don’t know any teachers who will retroactively give you an A for getting a 5 on the AP exam.
@HardOREasy oh well that’s the policy of my school, it Happened to me freshman year.
junior @Gumbymom
@KingBibi I have a 4.4 gpa and i mostly get As with a few B’s. Im really scared colleges r gonna turn me down just bc of that C. and I’m not sure on my major yet. i really want to be a lawyer when i grow up.
One C will not be an automatic reject from UCLA, but you will have extreme competition from applicants with great grades and scores. Also, UCLA only uses 10-11th grades in their GPA calculation, so your GPA will take a hit especially if you are OOS since HS honors courses will not be given the extra honors points. Only AP/IB/DE courses get honors points for the UC GPA calculation. If you are CA in-state, it might not make as much as an impact. At the end of Junior year, calculate your UC GPA and see how you compare to the Freshman profile for 2017.

Good Luck, study hard and get the grade up.
I don’t know how it works in the admissions committees, but if you declare yourself as a liberal arts major and you have performed very well in all of your other classes, they might let it slide. I think it would be extremely difficult to make the case for your being a STEM/business/econ major. High school AP calc is pretty easy, so if you find it that difficult you would probably flunk out of a STEM major at one of these schools anyway.
I think you could pull it off if you give the impression that you’re really passionate about liberal arts and declare yourself as a poli sci major or something.
Also… is there any way for you to retake the class? I know that was a thing in my school
Good luck and hopefully you can pull out the C. Explore option to drop down to Calc AB next semester if in BC.
