Please Help I have a Problem!

Thank you so much Patriot!!

If your studies skills are good then you should just take AP Bio, save that money and maybe use it to self-study another AP which will definitely make your application better.

Thanks for the advice! However, refer to my previous answer to Born2Dances comment.

@Diagnostician there are online courses in specialized biology classes (such as genetics, ect) also available online. Check Standford and MIT for their classes offered. Many other colleges or other online institutes offer similar opportunities.

As for what you’ll learn in your AP class, I can’t really speak for your school. But my school does do a pretty hefty amount of genetics in AP Bio.

I want to do the online classes, but I hate staring in front of a computer screen all day. I would be bored. Also, the classes at the Community College would be weighted so that would also raise my rank, which is awesome. I’m going to do USABO next year, so do any of you know which class at the community college would benefit fit me most as a supplement to AP bio? Evolution, micro, genetics, etc?

there are so many variables here…

Let’s say you take a summer class in XYZ at the local college. Depending on what college you attend, they may or may not accept the credit for the course, and you’ll have to take it again.

my vote would be to take AP bio, save the money for college, and, as others have said, try a free online bio course and/or bio tutoring etc etc etc.

@mtpaper
I want to start off by saying I appreciate your input. However, the pros of taking the class at XYZ college are: higher gpa, higher rank, more knowledge for USABO and AP bio, would satisfy my thirst for biology, and possibly be good for admissions purposes (i’m not sure). The cons are: price. As I’ve said before, I would hate to sit in front of a computer screen to learn biology. ;{

As I said, weighted GPA isn’t all that important. Some schools assign 6.0 or more for a weighted class, while some don’t do anything at all. Colleges are well aware of this, and as such, don’t care about the number of a weighted GPA all that much.

I know but my rank will go up as a result. Will taking a college class affect my admissions chances? Will colleges like that I took a class?

dude dont take the class… just self-study for sat ii bio, and take ap bio
-______- the local cc class might not live up to your expectations
and it is a price to pay…

Nah, especially if you are applying to really tough schools. They don’t find APs and CC classes all that impressive, because those are nothing compared to the rigor of their courses.

Hmm, I heard that taking a college class shows colleges that you’re passionate about learning, which is a big plus. Also, if I take a difficult class, I will be able to learn more than I would in AP bio and be able to do very well in AP bio next year. Any thoughts?

Can’t you just take the college course and the AP exam? Sounds to me like you’d be wasting your time taking the same thing twice.

Well, taking the class at school would only benefit me by being an easy class, higher my gpa/ rank, and allowing me to learn more!

I don’t understand why you’re asking for help, because you seem to have your mind set. Most of the people here are telling you that the college course is superfluous and that AP Biology is fine, but if you want to take the summer course then you should do it!

Btw, I’m not sure if using a college class to raise your GPA will be as good as you think it is… Some colleges might feel that you’re using a gimmicky way to raise your GPA in lieu of just doing well in your high school classes.

lol, it’s not that I have my mind set it’s that I like to get both sides of the argument. I just want to see what the CC community has to say. The only reason I think it’s so great is that lots of the admissions people that I have talked to have said that taking a college course shows passion to learn, so I’m pretty surprised the general consensus is against the course.

Really? Most of the adcoms I’ve spoken to have said the exact opposite. Like @Zapurdead said, unless the kid is taking an entire CC curriculum in addition to high school classes (and doing really well in both), it’s either irrelevant or seen as trying to raise GPA/impress the adcoms.

Hmm, I’m so disappointed now. I guess i’m not going to take it because everyone is telling me not too. I was really hoping that everyone would say it was a good thing, but this is very surprising. I’m pretty surprised that taking an extra class would seem bad. I want to take it because I really like bio and all the other things I have mentioned are just perks I get with taking it. So you guys suggest that instead of wasting 300 bucks I just settle down and study bio on my own?

Or take the free online courses (offered by places as amazing as MIT, Stanford, etc!)

Okay, thanks Born2Dance, that’s what i’ll be doing this summer. Thanks for all the advice guys! Any other questions that need to be asked, feel free!
