My CommonApp essay is going to be about my most important EC/job and the lessons it taught me, but when I see the writing supplements for applications it says to describe an important EC etc. Can I describe the same EC and elaborate on more of what I did or should I use a completely different one?

You need to strategize . . . look at all the colleges you’re applying to, and figure out where that essay would serve you best. On the common app or in the supplements? And, no, the two essays probably shouldn’t be about the same topic.

You want to take advantage of telling about another aspect of what you do or who you are, so don’t talk about the same EC twice. But what dodgersmom says…

Am I able to use a different common app essay for each college? Or do I send the same one to all of them?

You get ONE common app essay, plus whatever supplements your schools require. That’s why you have to strategize before you write. You may want to save that special essay for one of the supplements . . . or you may not. You have to look at the essay requirements for all the schools you’re applying to, and then figure it out.
