Please Help Me Decide: UT Austin vs. UC Berkeley

I want to do ChemE at either UT Austin or UC Berkeley. I'm OOS for both so cost isn't a huge factor. I want to get into the biopharma/energy/biofuel/oil industries (I know, wide range). I plan on getting an MS + MBA after working in industry for a few years. I would love to live in either Texas or California.

What are the pros/cons of attending these schools? Which would you recommend?

I don’t know anything about Chem E or UC Berkeley, so I can’t be of much help. It sounds like you will do well at either place. Have you visited both campuses and talked to profs? What were your impressions?

If you are paying OOS, you should probably go to a school like Rice if you are good enough to get in.

I would choose UT over Rice. UT is ranked higher in ChemE and does a LOT of research. Also, there are many more Texas-Exes working in Texas, and typically they will give preference to UT grads.

Huh? Rice doesn’t even belong in this conversation.

Undergraduate Engineering Specialties: Chemical
1 Massachusetts Institute of Technology Cambridge, MA
2 University of California–Berkeley Berkeley, CA
3 Stanford University Stanford, CA
4 University of Minnesota–Twin Cities Minneapolis, MN
5 University of Texas–Austin Austin, TX
5 University of Wisconsin–Madison Madison, WI
7 University of Illinois–Urbana-Champaign Champaign, IL
8 California Institute of Technology Pasadena, CA
9 Georgia Institute of Technology Atlanta, GA
10 Princeton University Princeton, NJ

Both are in the top 5 and so you can’t really go wrong either way. I’d personally go to UC Berkeley since it’s only rivaled by MIT. Chemistry at Berkeley is really strong and you’d be getting a lot of great networking opportunities. I’m a Berkeley alum so I’m kind of biased though. haha.
I don’t know as much about UT-Austin. I know my friend visited for grad school and really liked Austin. Depending on the area, Berkeley’s really nice too.
I’d say Berkeley is better for biopharma/energy/biofuel while UT-Austin might be better for oil industry, since they’re physically closer to them.

UT Austin is absolutely amazing for clean and high tech in the energy and bio industries. If you want oil industry go to A&M or U of H.

pinata, you’re absolutely right - Rice doesn’t even belong in this conversation as I never even mentioned it lol.

profoundquiet, i’ve heard that berkeley is pretty good for oil too but I see your point.

Any pros/cons of going to UT vs. Berkeley regardless of major?

are you currently in San Antonio?

no, I’m OOS for both UT and Berkeley. I’m from the east coast.
