Please give me your input. Now that college acceptance letters have come in, I have narrowed down my college choices to three schools: The University of Michigan, Virginia Tech, and The University of Virginia. I am a resident of northern Virginia, and at the moment I have been accepted into all three engineering programs, however, I do not know how long my interest in engineering will last.

If it came down to VT or UVA at this point I would probably chose VT, even though a lot of my friends are already going to UVA, because it has a better engineering program. However I do not know how long my interest in this field will last and if I were to decide to not do engineering, my secondary career choice would be in the business or economic fields, where UVA is a better school. This would make me want to choose UVA, however it is hard to do that when both of my parents and practically everyone and their kids on my dad’s side of the family, went to Virginia Tech.

This is where Michigan comes in. Michigan has both a great engineering program (number 8), and has a great business program (number 3). So that makes me want to choose Michigan. However the only problem is that Michigan will be about 15 to 20 thousand more each year because I qualify for Virginia in-state tuition. The distance from home and the cold weather does not bother me; it is primarily the cost that I will have to pay.

All three of these schools are great schools, and I am sure I will be happy wherever I go, however I have no idea which of the three schools I should choose. Any help or comments you have would be greatly appreciated.

well if money is not a problem I would go to Michigan if I were you. Michigan is great all around. If you ever decide to switch majors at Michigan you will know that you will still be in a prestigious program plus I love Ann Arbor.

Actually, Michigan is #7 in Engineering! LOL Seriously, Michigan is anywhere between #5 and #10 in Engineering. At that level, it is all good.

At any rate, if money is not an issue...if your parents are well off or if you get some aid from Michigan, I would recommend Michigan. However, if finances are a problem, I would recommend UVA...not VT. VT is not much better than UVA in Engineering and overall, UVA is significantly better than VT.
