please help me find an NYC school that I have a chance and the money to attend

I posted this over in Chances earlier, but I'm new and after looking at the forum for a little bit I feel like it probably belongs here
Im a high school Junior with a GPA of 3.65 (Weighted). I have taken 1 AP, I'm in the middle of another and will be taking 3 my senior year. I also have been in 5 honors classes and the last two years have taken a Musical theater class during my lunch. Im looking for a school in NYC or the NYC area, that I can afford. I have done drama all three years of high school, and before that including some community theatre work. I have Altar served for 9 years now. II am an eagle scout, and i have a couple other various activities. I really want to major in Theatre/Acting/Drama or whatever is offered. But it needs to be at an affordable price. Any cheap schools or schools that might offer me scholarships would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much. Feel free to ask any more questions you feel are necessary.

I would say my school (Syracuse University) Or Vassar college.

you could try any of the CUNYs. theyre all over the different boroughs so im sure you could find one you like.

Do you know if any of the CUNY schools have particularilly good theatre programs or notoriously bad ones?

Wagner College(private, not so cheap) is known for one of the best theatre programs in the country. CUNYs all have good programs, but if you’re OOS it makes sense to go to one with dorms (Baruch, Hunter, City), which also tend to be the best academically.

edit: Fordham, if you can get in and pay, has terrific theatre and acting programs. The Fordham arts campus is right near Lincoln center, an epicenter of fine arts.

Well out of the options I’ve seen CUNY looks like it’s the only affordable one. I’ve heard city has terrible academics though. However, I would be applying to the honors college. Is that any better academically. Also, I’ve heard Brooklyn has a good theatre department. Do you know anything about that?
Thanks everyone for all your help!

Yeah Macaulay Honors is an excellent program, with top academics and many of the smartest kids in NYC if you can get in (average SAT is 1400+ at this point I think). City is not known as the best academically (Hunter usually ranks first for that). I don’t know about Brooklyn theatre specifically, but it might be a tough situation for an OOS student (almost everybody is a commuter, you may feel out of place).

HOw good of a chance do you think I have to make Macaulay? My average is a 90.5 in addition to the information in my initial post. Also, how much Are the different schools like a traditional college (dorms, sports, parties, etc.)? Thatnks once again

You’re not going to get the typical college experience, but thats not to say that it won’t be a great one.

Macaulay even pays tickets for many events (and its NYC, so this is a great opportunity), and even sets some money aside to pay 100% for study abroad.

They even paid for my pre-med friend’s Kaplan MCAT classes.

Also, Macaulay pays a LOT of attention to your essays. A wonderful essay can more than compensate for grades that aren’t amazing. So put a lot of effort into that.

I’ve also been looking at Fordham, because I heard it gives alot of financial aid. I just don’t want to pay 40-50 a year. Anything under 35 is ok. I know it’s theater is excellent but only 40 people make it. How many people adudition each year?

Nazareth, Syracuse, Hofstra, Ithaca College, Le Moyne, and Eugene Lang School of new arts. Those are good schools with tuition fees less or equal to 35k. If you have a great arts and/or drama portfolio (that’s what they call it right? portfolio?), then you’ll have a good chance of getting a scholarship. I narrowed those colleges down to what you describe from your academic and extracurricular achievements with collegeboard’s college matchmaker. hope it helps :D

Are you instate? If so, SUNY Purchase would be a possibility. I have no idea how hard it would be to get into the Theater Arts Program, but the price is right. Even if you are out of state, the costs are much less than some of the private schools.

You need to look at the Theater/Drama Major and Musical Theater Major subforums in the College Majors Forum. Click on “Discussion Home” in the upper-left of this screen and then scroll down. You will find lots of good ideas there.

SUNY Purchase and SUNY New Paltz are good options for you. They are not in NYC but close enough to take advantage of what the city has to offer and I know New Paltz puts many of their students in NYC for internships and job placement while attending the school.

Le Moyne is nowhere near the city! It’s a good 4 hours from it!

It is however a very good school with a solid drama department and acting major…but there is no musical theatre if that’s what you’re looking for.

I just finished my first semester there though, so if you have any specific questions on the school, I would be happy to answer them!
