What kind of schools should I be looking at?

I'm a high school Junior (Male) in NY in a bit of a troubling situation. During my Sophomore year, I didn't realize the true value of having a good GPA. So here I am, working myself dead Junior year to bring up my GPA, which may end up at around a 3.4 to a 3.5 by the end of this year.

For my SATs, I'm hoping to receive anywhere from a 1300-1400 or a 2000-2150. I took them yesterday, aha.

My EC's are decent, mostly revolving around music and theatre.

School Drama club, which runs extensive and crazy hours. At its worst, it can be about 50-60 hours a week. We're widely known as one of the best high school drama programs in the area. I've received leads and solos.

All County Choir, and hopefully All State Choir next year.

Community Service (50+ hours a year) at a local Halloween show.

Active member of National Honor Society.

Performed a concert at a Nursing Home.

Tutoring Middle Schoolers

Active member of school's Literary Magazine, and have had multiple short stories published in it.

Participant in school Cabarets.

I've also been in a few honors and AP courses.

Advanced (Chamber) choir

Honors English (Received a 101 Average for 11th grade, and received a 100 on the state examination)

Honors Global History

Speech and Drama (12th grade class, taken in sophomore year

Advanced Spanish Grammar

I also take a few online courses.

In addition...

Honor roll/High honor roll

"Outstanding Sophomore Vocalist" and likely to receive "Outstanding Junior Vocalist". I've also received solos for choir pieces.

I've also become a member of a local church. I've come to Christian faith, though the rest of my family does not attend church. I'm involved in Youth Group, Choir, as well as other activities there.

My essays will be spectacular and my recommendations from teachers who have become close friends of mine.

Lastly (and I don't know if this means anything), I was a participant in the all county bowling league, and was selected as an alternate for all state.

Anyways, I'd like to attend a college in New York City, or an area nearby. SUNY schools are an option, and I love most LAC's. Any suggestions? I'm open to anything.

PS: My top school is the Macaulay Honors College at Hunter College. I'll be applying early decision and going for an interview. Any ideas on admissions here?

You’re applying to Macaulay - are you in serious need of financial aid?

Yeah. My parents aren’t able to pay at all for college.

I’m guessing that means I’m too early in the game to be asking this question? D:

Actually now is the perfect time to be asking this question. Looking at SUNYs and CUNYs is a good idea since they should cost the least. Any idea what you might like to major in?

I’m going either for Criminal Justice or Education, with a minor in Drama.

Once you have scores, we will be able to advise. Getting into mac honors is very hard so you’ll need other affordable options.

I’ve heard Macaulay at Hunter is the hardest to get into out of the CUNYs, have you considered applying to Macaulay at a different CUNY?

If you want to stay very close/in to NYC, try Columbia, Hamilton, and Sarah Lawrence.
A little farther away are Holy Cross, Gettysburg, Hampshire, Haverford, Lafayette, Lehigh, Princeton, Swarthmore, UPenn, Vassar, and Wesleyan.
And a little farther away are Bucknell, Dickinson, Franklin and Marshall, Harvard, Mount Holyoke, Skidmore, Union, and Williams.

Any of the CUNYs or SUNYs would make an excellent choice financially and location-wise.

Are your assumed scores a shot in the dark, or based on practice tests? Your scores will have a big impact on what we can tell you.
