I have a huge problem concerning my college plans. I was accepted to the UMich engineering school and I recieved almost $27,000 in financial aid. That leaves my family to pay about $7,000 (excluding misc expenses and junk). However, I just recieved a letter in the mail yesterday saying that I was just awarded $29,000 in scholarships from the University of Kansas (I am in-state). Of the 5 scholarships I was awarded, 4 are renewable, leaving about $7,000/year ($8,000 for first year). I addition, I recieved almost $15,000 in financial aid for KU, of which $6,300 were grants. Note that I live in-state, so I only have to pay about $7,000/year for KU (I can stay at home). My question is: what do I do?!?! Do I go for the excellent Michigan school of Engineering and pay $7,000/year or go to KU for practically free? Do you think that this will affect where I go to when I apply to a grad school?

If I were in your shoes I would definitely go to Michigan...$7000 is more than worth it for Michigan's college experience compared to Kansas.

Definately Michigan, it should be a no-brainer! Unless you would go in debt or something with the 7000/yr for umich.

UMich no doubt, greatly improves your chances for grad school. In fact, I think Mich sends more students to grad school than any other university in the nation, I'm not positive though.

Actually, I think Johns Hopkins University is ranked #1 in the nation for students earning graduate degrees in 10 years (80% of the students).

I would say go for Michigan. $7,000 is nothing for a top 20 university.

I echo everybody else when I urge you to go to Umich

Go Blue!!!!!!
