PLEASE help me. What should I major in?

Please take the time to read this. I am so lost and getting some different opinions/advice would mean a lot to me.

I am a sophomore at a community college in California and I have to submit my application to transfer THIS WEEK. I have been trying to decide my major since I was in high school and three years later I really am not much closer.

I always thought I wanted to do something in the health field (first physical therapy, then dietician, then nursing, dental hygiene, etc.) then I started to worry that I wouldn't like it and I am scared to commit for all those years of education and then feel trapped with a very specific degree.

I then decided I was going to apply to transfer as a business major because it can be applied to a lot of things, but I am not interested in selling things or sitting at a desk all day. I guess I would still consider human resources, but I've read that that you are not very well liked in HR and I would like to be in a positive environment (aka not surrounded by people who hate me).

I really would love a career where I can somehow help people. I have considered teaching but I feel like once you are a teacher you don't have many other options! I would only want to teach high school and up.

I am a pretty good student and I know I can succeed in whatever I put my mind to, but it is difficult to find the motivation when I feel so lost and pressured to decide on what I want to spend the rest of my life doing. I would like to make at least $60,000 a year.

I know that a lot of people say "you don't need to rush. take time to figure out what you enjoy." but I have been trying to figure out what career I want for years and I do not want to spend another year at a community college! I like art, but do not want to major in it. I really want to help people, but do not want a health career where their life is in my hands. I like psychology but I have hear time and time again that it is not a very valuable major with just an undergrad.

Have you been in a similar position and do you have any advice for me or recommend a certain major? Thanks in advance.

I hope this can be helpful to you, since this is already past your week’s deadline, but…

Perhaps major in biology? It’s a good place to start for medical fields, and at the end of your undergrad if you still want to work in healthcare you can do that and apply to medical schools. Pair that with an education degree and then if med school doesn’t work out or isn’t for you, you can teach biology in secondary education. (To teach postsecondary, you’ll need a MS or probably a PhD).

The only downside is that majoring in bio, with or without an education degree, probably won’t make you over 60,000, but you could still get decent money with it.

Nursing you probably will make around 60,000 a year, and you can get an undergrad degree in nursing right out of college–so you can help people in healthcare without having to sacrifice another 4-6 years to graduate programs. The downside is that nursing is a really high pressure high stress job, but the payoffs are great if you really like working with and helping people.

Hope this helps!
