So in high school i took calc ab, and got a 4 on the ap exam. I took this class 2 years ago. So my question is, are they going to make me go into calc 2b, or can i take calc 2a from the start? Because when i called the testing service, they said i have to go into the 2nd qtr of it, and that since i passed the first part of it according to the ap exam, i cant enroll in that class. I'm hoping they were wrong about this or something because i really dont remember anything from that class and its not fair to put me in the middle of a class. I'm going to be a engineer major if that's of any assistance in answering this question.

Can anyone help or give some input?

When they said 2nd quarter of it, they probably meant calc 2b.

Are you saying you want to start in calc 2a?

The 4 on the AP exam will make you eligible to skip 2a and start at 2b.

Yes exactly that. I want to take 2a. I took the calc class 2 years ago and remember barely any of it. Its not fair that i have to start in the middle of the series. Do i have the OPTION to start at 2b, or do i HAVE to start at 2b since i have a passing grade on the ap exam?

Well, you can probably start at 2a if you wish, but it just means that your AP credit may not even give you elective credit in that case-- not sure though.

I honestly think the only thing you need to remember how to do from calc 1 is derivatives. Was integrals even covered in 2a? I can’t remember. But yes you can most LIKELY elect to start from 2a.

Little of what you learn in 2A is required for 2B. Refresh your memory on how to do some simple differentiation and you’re good to go. If anything, review your pre-calc stuff (just the trig).

You can’t take 2A and receive any credit for the class, and it would make no sense to do that anyway.

My daughter struggle with AP Calc her senior year yet got a 5 on the AP Exam (her teacher, though tough, prepared them). She started her freshman year (this year) in Math 2B. She got an A in that class too…she said most of it was a review of what she had already learned in high school!

Bottom line, as others have said…do some of your own review and enroll in 2B for the credit. It will be fine.

I’ve never taken 2A at UCI (also skipped into 2B), but from what I’ve heard it’s actually a more frustrating class than 2B. You should be fine as long as you enroll in a good teacher, I don’t think much of the stuff from A carries on.
