Hello. I got a 5 on the Calc AB exam which exempts me from taking Math 2A at UCI. So I would be placed in math 2B. I COULD take math 2A again, but I won't receive credit for it. But it has crossed my mind to take 2A again because 1) I took the AP test junior year of hs so I forgot stuff about derivatives 2) if I go to graduate school they might not accept the AP credit (not sure if this is true).

In short, would I benefit from retaking an intro calculus course? (majoring in either engineering or a physical science)

take 2b.

if you got a 5 ur good enough.

i am also wondering the same thing (except i got a 4 and took it during my senior year). I read somewhere that there is some overlap between math 2a and 2b is this true?

I got a 4 on AB my senior year; I’m hoping there is an overlap between 2A and 2B because math intimidates me hehe

I got a 5 on Calc AB also and was unable to take 2A.

I was somewhat annoyed about this because some med schools(UCLA) will not take AP credit. I might end up taking 2D eventually, I don’t know. Supposedly the Bio counselors told people in my situation to take the 2A equivalent class at a CC after 2B but I that sounds stupid to me and I don’t know how true it is.

I am in 2B right now(SSII) and compared to my high school Calc class it is not very hard. It was also easy to quickly relearn the basics of 2A(Power rule, Chain rule, quotient rule…).
I was surprised some of that stuff came back so quickly since I took Calc over a year ago.

It’s not a disadvantage to be ahead… I would be happy to take 2D instead of 2A

but it is correct, UCLA doesn’t take math AP credit.

would it then be okay to take 2d senior year or taking it before med school app is better? also taking 2a at cc…would ucla look down upon that? cuz im in the same situation thanks…
(and i know this thread was a long time ago)

I would just take 2B.

From my experience, the most you have to remember from 2A is just finding derivatives, chain rule, limits, product rule; stuff that you’ll remember right away since its so easy.

would they let you take 2A? I know that prereq for that class is that you didn’t get a 4 or a 5 on calc ab exam…
but either way, i would take 2b.

I am in a situation that is sort of like Ultex91 as well. I took Calculus during the summer of my Junior year and received credit for the class. Now I am unable to retake Math 2A since I forgot almost all of my calculus and have to go straight to Math 2B. I was wondering if it is necessary to sit in on the Math 2A classes in order to relearn the calculus I forgot, or is it just fine relearning it in Math 2B?

^, I wouldn’t deem it necessary to sit in 2A, but you certainly have the liberty of doing so.

If your calculus is rusty, I found this person on Youtube to help me LOTS on calculus: look up Patrickjmt on youtube. Type in certain topics, and he will mostly likely have covered it in one of his videos on calculus.

Thank you very much junshik! This will definitely help me review in order to prepare me for Math 2B.
