Please Help Me with GPA

Hello Everyone, here we go.
I am in IL, and would like to attend either UofC, NW, UIC GPPA, WashU, or Ann Arbor at the farthest. (I don't want to go out of state, and I'll list reasons later on)
GPA: 3.3
Weighted GPA:4.7
ACT Comp. 36
SAT: 2360 Composite
AP Exams: 4 World History, 5 in Euro. (Taking 5 this year and 5 next year)

Classes:

Frosh:
H English A-/B+
H Algebra II B+/B+
AP World History A+/A+

AP European History: A/C+

(At the end of my sophomore year, a primary family member had a stroke. I missed 4 Math Tests, and my Euro teacher forced me to take the final which I, prior to that, did not know about. I also missed the Euro exam. I stayed in the Hospital with my family member and had slept maybe 6 hours that week in total.)

Junior Year:
AP Physics: A+ (Quarter 1)/?
AP Psychology: A+ (Quarter 1)/?
AP Calc BC: A (Quarter 1)/?
AP USH: A (Quarter 1)/?
AP Lang: A+ (Quarter 1)/?
Spanish 4: A+ (Quarter 1)/?

By the end of the year, I will work my tail off to get a 3.6, which should be possible. I am taking the SAT in early 2014.

A strong upward trend is one of the most positive indicators in a college application. You still have a chance at those colleges if you get a 4.0 in Jr. Year. That is the most important thing you can do.
Chicago, WUSTL, NW are always reaches. You have explaining to do, of course.
Ann Arbor is a match if you get 4.0 Jr. year.

Can you explain what a “reach” school means?
I also forgot to add these:
NHS
Impromptu State 4th Place (Speech) as a Sophomore.

I agree in that WUSTL, UChicago and Northwestern are reaches. As long as you can justify the drop in your GPA and bounce back during your Junior year, you should be able to get into UMich. Here is a chart with percentages explaining what reach, math, safety, etc. is:

Low Safety: 95-100
Safety: 80-95
High Safety: 75-80

Low Match: 65-75
Match: 45-65
High Match: 35-45

Low Reach: 20-35
Reach: 5-20
High Reach: <5

Mind Chancing back?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1553314-chances-ivies-public-ivies-will-chance-back.html

Hmm, alright.
Are NW, WUSYL, and UC ever considered matches for many others?
I mean, I know this is a dumb question, but do people ever get into their “reach” schools?

I disagree about Michigan chances- Michigan puts more emphasis on GPA than the other schools- now you will need your GC to perhaps mention your circumstances regarding your low GPA.

Students always get into reach schools, but not everyone does. There is no formula to tell how one will get in to what school. My son got into WUSTL (and is attending) with an ACT of 30, but he had an UW GPA of 3.93 in an IB diploma program, phenomenal LOR, etc. I would meet consider NW, UC, or WUSTL to be match schools- they are are almost always a reach.

Thank you a lot!
Yes, my Counselor is writing a “Letter of Explanation”.
Also, I plan on being an AP Scholar w/ distinction (I need to score 3 or better on one more AP exam).
I just got a conformation to shadow and publish a “study” with a doctor.
But you don’t think that my ACT and SAT will help? I plan on taking it again to see if I can get a 2400.
My ACT is a perfect 36 (first sitting) if that matters.

If you got a 36 on the ACT, why would you waste your time and money trying to get a 2400 on the SAT (you already got a 2360 and have nothing to gain by getting a 2400)? This is really frivolous. Spend more time getting your grades up, since the academic transcript is more important than test scores.

Alright. Thanks for the advice!
