<p>Linking the sides of the gorge (was) a suspension bridge (built) a hundred years (earlier) by local farmers seeking to expedite travel between their fields (to) the marketplace.</p>
<p>I can see why "to" is wrong because "between X to Y"</p>
<p>but why is "built" correct? shouldn't it be "had been built" in past perfect tense as there is a sequence of time!</p>
<p>1st event: building of bridge
2nd event: was a suspension bridge</p>
<p>I always get these past perfect, present perfect, and generally sequence of time questions wrong. Could someone give me a lengthy or very informative info/know-how they've amassed?</p>
