I am in ECE major at my university and I am taking this class which is required for graduation. This class is Material Science, which is outside of my major.

I have 2 ECE courses, 1 english course, 1 material course this semester.

My problem is that this semester, I am doing ok in my ECE classes and english class but I did not do well in my material science exam.

Each exam in material science is worth 22.5%, 3 exams + 1 final and 10% quiz.

Based on this, I did horrible on the first exam (61%), thought I studied well but it turns out that I didn't perform well, made lots of careless errors. Quizzes have been around 70% lately.

I have to decide whether I should switch this class either to pass/fail (satisfactory or unsatisfactory grading) or should I withdraw and get some money back.

Problem, I'll be a part time and no I am not on financial aid. I am just worried about the tax benefit for full time students vs part time.

So please, would it be wise for me to switch this class to pass/fail or withdraw...either way I'll have to repeat the course. But with pass fail, I'll at least make an attempt to get the satisfactory credit but will need to retake again for a grade.

**Edit: my GPA is not that great either.

Thanks for your help!
