To drop or not to drop...that is the question.

I was doing okay on my math class but I just took my midterm and I think I failed it. I still have a chance to drop it but that will affect my financial aid status to a warning status which is inconvenient. There’s still a minor chance of me passing the class but I’m not sure if I should risk it. Have any of you dealt with something similar? any advice? Thanks in advance. :-w

First of all, you would be withdrawing, not dropping (that is done in the first week or two).
WIthdrawing puts a “W” on your transcript which has no affect on your GPA. One W is fine…but a pattern of them may be troubling to future employers.
However, some colleges have “WF” which means you withdrew, but you were failing at the time. Look what your college does.

But before you withdraw, **talk to your academic adviser **and consider the following:

  1. Do you have a math requirement at your school?
  2. are you still before the Withdrawal period?
  3. If you dropped this class, would you still be full time? (this affects housing and financial aid)
  4. Do you have a scholarship where you have to maintain a certain GPA?
  5. When would you make up the credits?
  6. Are you getting extra help (tutor, office hours) ??

Have you tried any of the tips in this link to get more help?

I decided not to withdraw. Apparently, most of my class didn’t do so well on the midterm so my instructor decided to change one of his policies. If we get a better grade on the final he’s going to replace our midterm’s grade with the final, so now I feel more confident about it. The last day to withdraw was one day after I posted this thread though, that’s why I was indecisive but I appreciate your comment!
