My daughter just finished her first year in cullanary arts and is doing very well. When she got her finnincial award letter, she asked why the summer column was blank. The aid office said “no problem” you can re-apply in summer. She did and there is a very big problem. They said she’s burnt for all loans until fall.

She gets a work study and pell grant to pay tution but nothing to live on so this means she may have to drop out. We are heart broken.

The aid office said she can write a letter and ask for a grant but i dont get why you’d only get loans for spring and fall only. Any advice for us please? This is not the first problem we’ve had with the aid folks. I know they are overworked and under-staffed, but it seems they may be “blowing off” students.

She has probably already received the maximum she is allowed in federal loans for the school year. The school can not award her more than the maximum allowed by federal rules. The maximum Stafford loan for a freshman for the entire year is $5500. Did she already receive that? If so then she is not eligible for more Stafford loans until the 2011-2012 school year.

As you know, the summer Pell will not be available at all after this year. So this is probably the best summer aid she will get.

where can I go to see loan limits? With no Pell next year, she’ll be in a pickle. She’s be a 2nd yr student so I hope a little more in loan limits.

Regular year Pell is still around. Summer Pell is what is gone. The Stafford loan limits for independent students (I see from your other thread that your daughter is an independent student) are $9500 for freshmen, $10,500 for sophomore, $12,500 for third year and up with an aggregate limit of $57,500.

This thread is for Bates College in Maine, not Bates Technical College in Tacoma, WA.
