gpa: 3.7 (weighted), but had a few c's. took the most competitive/challenging courses our school had to offer.

sat I: 2250
haven't taken sat II's yet

ECs: high school yearbook, photography club, pottery club, newspaper, student government, bands/orchestras, very serious musician (winner of competitions), working on college art portfolio, comm. service and special projects at nursing homes and some other local institutions.

first generation american, speak four languages, national merit commended

any ideas regarding what types of schools i should be looking into? specific examples? really have no idea of my chances, but i think they're pretty low for competitive schools because of my less than stellar grades and relative lack of ECs. any insight would be helpful. thank you!

Look at Oberlin, Vassar, Barnard, U of Rochester, Carnegie Mellon, Rice Univ. You didn't say anything about what state you live in, what part of the country you are interested in finding a school in, or affordability. Apply to some in-state schools and safeties, as well. Oberlin just sounds like a really good fit, based on the information that you gave.

Hmmm some schools with similar stats for students entering include:

University of Florida (your gpa is below average but your SAT is above average)

Rutgers

Rice University

Boston College

University of South Carolina

UVA (would be a slight reach)

Eh, if the OP lives in Virginia, especially southern VA, she's in at UVA. If not, I agree, slight reach.

What do you want to study?
What setting would you like your school to be located in, i.e. Urban, Suburban, Rural?
Do you want to be on a first-name basis with everyone at the school, or do you prefer to be just one face in the crowd? Or a happy medium between the two?
How do you learn best? Lectures? Discussion?

good questions, i probably should have included them originally, sorry. I'm ok with both urban and suburban campuses, and would prefer a small/medium sized school.

William & Mary
Duke
Wake Forest
Richmond
Princeton (though your GPA will make it a reach)

also look into music conservatories if you plan to pursue that. Schools with top-notch music departments should also be considered. Good luck to you.
