My daughter is a 4.0 student, 1310 (2020) on SAT. Accepted to Honors program at Udelaware with merit monies will cost 16k a yr. Accepted to Lehigh, no monies will cost 46k a yr. She wants to become a Dr. Which school should we chose.

You sound like us. D accepted to state u with full ride plus a lot of benefits(laptop/parking/honorscollege/studyabroad/fewthousandextra$), but the program she's interested in right now is mediocre at best(though her other interests have better programs and she is still undecided). She also is accepted to her dream college--only drawbacks are its weather/distance from home/and costs$46000--we don't qualify for financial aid so thats out of pocket. The $ difference will end up being over $50000 a year to go to her dream college. Yes, we could afford it, but she's interested in grad school etc.....

Does she want to become a doctor or do you want her to?
I'm amazed at the amount of parents on these forums!

It could be that both you and your children are intrinsically motivated, but I would guess that their motivation is largely if not entirely a result of pushes from the parents, and when they're off to college where that won't exist, the effects will be obvious!

In other news, she should visit them both and choose the one that she feels would be more comfortable. No point in going to a school she won't enjoy completely!

Hi sleplessmom & Scmember,

Welcome to CC.

Sleepless, Please keep in mind that your D can virtually go almost any college in the country and still become a Dr. if that is her desire. Since she sill have to take to Bio, Chem, Organic Chem, Physics, etc. which is given at all schools, her goal would be to get good grades and score really well on the MCAT

If money is an issue in your house then that will have to be a talk that you will have to have with your D as she may ultimately have to go where her money can take her. If you can easily pay the 46k out of pocket with out going in to debt, then it will come down to what the 2 of you see is the best school for her.

Each family's situation is different regarding what they would be willing to pay for. I agree with scmember that if the student is interested in grad/professional schools that represents its own set of expenses as with the exception of fully funded PhD programs most (not all) of the financial aid for grad/professional school is in the form of loans.

right now there is a thread on the parents foru:

Your kid takes the top scholarship instead of the top school. What's next?

you will see that there are varying views.

i would also recommend that you move your question to the parents forum so you would more likely get feedback from parents in your same situation.

Sir Brian, Actually I am a Dr. and I wish my daughter would choose a different profession. I am just concerned because we have agreed to pay for undergrad and med. school is on her. If she goes to a school that has offered her money then we can also pay for med. school. I would love for her to start her adult life without debt.
