Please help =(

I will be entering UIUC as a freshman this fall. I have questions about everythinggggg. Please, if anyone is generous enough to help, please leave me your advices. Thank you so much!!

I got invited to a Merit Program for Science/Math. Should I take it? Is it extremely hard or reasonable?

I’m thinking about taking Chemistry, Calculus, and one or two more classes. Which classes under the General Edu Requirement list are the easier/more interesting ones? And should I take only one semester or two semesters of Calculus? Also, which professors are good for these courses?

I tried looking at coursefire.com… but the abbreviations confused me. And when I tried looking under Chemistry, they had countless number of Chemistry classes. How do I know which one(s) to take?

For Gen/ Ed's, u wanna take a look at the history classes, not sure if that's your cup of tea, but Hist. 171(US History from 1619-1875 or so) is pretty easy, all u gotta do is go to lecture, take the notes, go to discussion, u discuss crap, don't really have to read the textbook, plus u get a nice study guide for the midterm and final(which isn't cumulative).

AFRO 101(African History from 1600s-present day is another good and not too hard of a class to take).

PSYC 101, unless you're into Psychology, is not a class I recommend taking. I had to drop that b/c I got like a D- on the midterm and there was no way I was gonna get a B- in that class. Very tough class with very few pts. in the semester, especially for a 4 credit class, you have like little room for error.

And you probably wanna take 4-5 classes depending on the credits and all. Plus u gotta take Rhetoric and Speech Comm so dont forget about that

the majors: <a href="http://courses.uiuc.edu/cis/programs/urbana/2007/fall/undergrad/index.html%5B/url%5D">http://courses.uiuc.edu/cis/programs/urbana/2007/fall/undergrad/index.html</a></p>

easy courses =)
oceans - some geology course i forget, 111 i think?
with dr. stewart. great teacher, online quizzes that you can take till you get a 100

"rocks for jocks" geo100 or something like that "planet earth" is not an easy A. you have to study for it. oceans>planet earth

aas199 with dr. kwon. just go to class, and yea do the projects/papers stuff she assigns once in a while.

i didn't take merit, but my friends said it was pretty managable.

gen eds- greek and roman myth(clcv 115) is an easy one, so is geography 100

are you confused with which chem class to take? if you are not using ap credit you have 2 options, chem 102(lecture)/103(lab) or chem 202/203. 202/203 is generally for chem/biochem majors. i don't know who's teaching it, but kelter was really easy. i didn't have hummel but i heard he was tough. i really like dr. ray too.

hope that helps.

look at the list of discovery courses. they are all automatic As and GPA-boosters as long as you show up. they range from 1 to 3 credits. you can only take them if you're a freshman, so get into them while you can. they won't fill any gened requirements but they are considered electives and there might be something you enjoy.

try to take 1 hour S/U courses if you have space, they can help your gpa as well.

whats S/U?

ooh thank you so much. rhetoric and speech are two diff classes, right?

thank you so much. do you think i should retake bio and chem or just use my ap credits?

thank you. where can i find this list of discovery courses?

also, which teacher is good for greek/roman mythology?

<a href="http://www.provost.uiuc.edu/programs/discovery/Courses_FA07.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.provost.uiuc.edu/programs/discovery/Courses_FA07.html</a></p>

in the future, learn to find stuff on your own. <a href="http://www.uiuc.edu%5B/url%5D">www.uiuc.edu</a> search box: discovery courses....

for a lot of majors, in addition to the composition requirement (Rhet 105 is what I took), they require speech communications (spcm 101 is what i will take this next semester). im hoping you at least looked at the links i posted up there, they'll show you what you need for each major.

I thought satisfactory/unsatisfactory was credit/no credit... as in it won't effect your gpa...

solomon for greek myth. i didn't use my ap credits and i heard that's a smart move because the next level class is much more difficult. also, college classes are dif. that ap hs classes. you still need to work a little but if you learned anything in ap, it's an easier A and you'll be fully prepared for the next level class.

thank you!! yea, i did look at the links and they helped a lot :D

I got a 4 on the AP stats test which can get me out of taking econ stats I but not econ stats II, both of which I need. I am taking econ stats I anyways this next semester cause I don't want to go into econ stats II with just the minimum knowledge that AP stats gave me. id especially recommend this for harder classes like bio/chem.

i dunno...i took Ap stats and got a 4 and decided to exempt out of econ 202. the econ 203 professor said that if you did you should probalby talk to him and go over what you may be behind in. however, as the class went on it looked like I actually knew more than other students who took econ 202.... in the end I got an A in the class whiel other people struggled.

hmmmm, well i guess i should expect 2 semesters of easy-As in econ stats then :D

<a href="http://www.oar.uiuc.edu/current/dars/generate.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.oar.uiuc.edu/current/dars/generate.html</a></p>

try that and see if it works.

Do you get to personally pick your professors for classes at summer registration?
