im taking 6 classes: 4 AP and 2 Honors and i want to drop an AP course:Stats. Is this a smart move or should i just go through with it even though i have 3 other APs. Will one AP course dropped make a big difference in college or is 3 AP courses considered challenging enough for junior year.

Woah, I am in the same situation....I think if you don't have any other major class (like doing research) then you should go ahead and take the class.

i like stats!

AP Stat is regarded as the easier of the AP maths. If you're taking AP Calc, I'd say drop it if you want to. If you're not taking another math, though, don't. Colleges for the most part like 4 years of math

I think five hard classes will be fine.

I do not think that taking the 6th hard class will affect your admissions chances.

My son, now a freshman at a highly competitive university, took a study hall every year of high school.

IMO it is important to have some free time to dream, imagine, mature, to bring about those special ideas/projects that set so many successful applicants apart.

Thanks for the advice. I'll be taking AP Calc next year so I will still have 4 years of math even if I drop Stats because I'm also taking Precal. The reason I wanted to take it is because I thought it would give me an edge over other applicants, but if it won't make much of a difference, I'd rather just drop it.

why does it have to be about college applications? Why dont you just take classes you enjoy? It seems to me you are making a big mistake if you are just taking classes because it looks good, thats how you mess yourself up.

I know what you mean. I'm very annoyed at people who take every aspect of high school and wonder how it'll affect college admissions.

To the OP, you're a junior. Put college out of your mind for a bit, and ask yourself if you really want to take the Stats course. If you have no other reason to take it other than college apps - drop it. Take a class that you're interested in, or just take a free.

on the same topic, you think i should drop ap environ if im already taking ap physics. I'm taking 6 AP's this year. AP environ was actually appealing to me, but i ended up with the worst teacher.

To the previous two posters i dont think high school is about finding what you like. I mean, how many high schoolers want to take ap calc or ap physics? Or how many would take the classes if it didnt affect admissions to college. I think college should be about finding your interests and exploring them. But then what do i know, i frequent a board dedicated to the question 'what are my chances?'

uhh, i took all 8 of my AP's cause i wanted to, nobody forces you to take AP's

Doogie were you really interested in all those classes? I think subconsiously you took it because it was also good for college. I really don't think you'd be interested in all those A.P. Classes.

Also what shoud you do if you really don't have many interests? I don't know what I like. I can adjust to just about anything so that makes it hard to tell my interests. Thanks

^ Honestly,

I will graduate with 10 AP's, and with the exception of Computer Science A, I have enjoyed every class, never forcing myself to take something. Then again, I will also graduate with 3 history AP's and 3 social science AP's, so, it just fit me.

Let's see. I'm taking AP Calc because that's the math track I was on (and because it let me take AP Physics), AP Physics because I really like Physics (took an intro course freshman year and liked it), AP Literature because I wanted to take a year-long Lit class (as opposed to the semester courses my school offers), AP Art History because it's interesting and several people recommended it to me as a good class, and AP Art Studio.

Now, if I really wanted to gear my schedule towards college apps, I'd definitely would have dropped AP Studio, and taken Spanish III and Latin II (I've only completed Latin I and Spanish II). AP Studio is what's holding my GPA down (Art's hovering around 89-90, while the rest of my GPA is sitting pretty at 95-96). But, I just freaking love the class.

I'm sort of glad I didn't find this board until this year, otherwise, maybe I would be gearing my schedule towards apps.

Thanks guys, you've definitely helped me out. While I think I wouldn't mind AP Stats, I do think I'm just taking it for the college application. I disagree that you should only take the classes you like though, if I did that I'd probably be dropping another course! I do well in everything I take, so thats no issue, I just wanted to get ahead. I've seen a lot of people who post say theyve taken 8 or 10 Aps and still dont have a decent shot to get into college. I know junior year is the most important (despite what some say) and I wanted to challenge myself to the fullest.

Thanks to your advice I think I'll be dropping the course and giving myself a little breathing room with all the other courses I'm taking. Thanks!
