My problem is right now i really want to become a doctor, and i dont know how to. This is due to the fact that i have no help at all from my parents because my parents are egyptian and didnt go to schhol here. I have lived in the U.S.A all my life and i love it, however my parents cant help me with any school work since i was a child. This was good because it helped me become self dependant but now i dont have any idea if my grades can make me become a doctor. This year i went to Egypt for vacation and i completed 164 hours of volunteer service at a doctors office and i am currently doing volunteer work at a nearby nursing home..so far i have about 20 hrs. My main problem is i am doing really bad on mY SATS and i dont know why. i took them twice and got 1380/2400 on both times. I must admit i havent been adequately studing for them, because i really dont know how. I really need everyone to help me because i will take the SATS in october and i really reaaly need advice. This year my courses are Forensic CHem, Physics, Nutrition, English, Gym, Calculus, and Public Speaking. As you can see by the amount of scinces i am taking i really want to be a doctor, however i dont know if i can since i got some C's which were due to the fact that i had the worst teachers possible, and im not exxagerating. I need people to comment about my grades and my Sats scores and tell me how to improve. THis year i plan to get all A's or high B's. I just need help with SAT stuff....so please please please if you can help me tell me all you can. PLEASE!!!! i hope you can all understand my situation. Thank You ALL!

P.S. my freahmen and sophomore GPA was like 3.2. I think it will go up when my school puts in my Junior GRades. PLus hopefully my senior grades after the 1st semester. Please if you have any advice tell me..also i need college advice. I live in NJ and want to go to a college in NJ...but dont know how to get started on my college stuff.....Please help me fast i need to apply for early admission. Thanks allot!

Hey, my name is Kareem too! Actually Abdul-Kareem, but you know...

Anyways, your grades are not as bad as you think. Sure, you got a few Cs but that should not hold you back. You need to apply at a college for premedical studies, and can major in anything (preferably a science). Getting into premed is not as hard as applying for medical school. Most people have what it takes for an undergrad college to accept them. You don't need to be straight A's, I'm not and I plan on becoming a premed. So you can definitely get into a college for premedical studies. And don't worry, after you do, most of you courses are sciences, and as I can see you have a passion for science so you'll probably do very well as a premed. I also have a passion for science (I have taken 8 sciences in HS so far).

Your SAT scores are a bit low, (sorry, I'm trying not to sound mean). Do you do better in math or the English sections? Please give us your score breakdown so we can help you.
At this point, I wouldn't worry about the Writing section, most colleges still don't consider it, so if you got a low score, don't worry about it. Focus mainly on the critical reading and math. From what I have read, I am going to assume critical reading is not your stronger area. If I am right, focus even more on raising your math score. Really, unless your applying to top schools, you only need an average SAT, (usually). So out of a 1600, an 11-12000 is a good score. If you can raise your math score, the it raises the total of the CR+M, which will be good enough.

Do a google search for NJ colleges with good premedical programs. Look at their averages for GPA and SAT, and really, you just need to be around that range (higher is preferable though :))

Hey, I live in NJ too! I can really see that your yearning to become a doctor - good for you! Go along with your passion even if you have a few doubts about your grades. (I don't even know what I want to major in yet, and my dad wants me to be a doctor too.) I'm sure you're a wonderful and hardworking student, so just do the best you can!

I will try to help you as well, but like akahmed said, we need more information about your weak areas on the SAT. Once we have that info, we'll do the best we can to help you out.

Thank you guys very much....i really apprectiate your help! Ok, basically my SAT scores were based on my not studying at all. Right now i have an SAT tutor which is helping me prep. I really apprecitiate you guys help. My sat scores are: 06/2007 SAT Reasoning Test View My Score Report and Essay

I know they are bad, but i plan on doing better hopefully this time around. I will take them in october and i might take them again in november depending how well i do, since ive only had the tutor for about 1-2 weeks. I need to ask you guys another question please. I was lookin at 7/8 year programs at rutgers which will give you am MD, after 7 or 8 years. DO you guys thin ki should apply to that, or take the pre-med stuff in collge, then take MCATS, then apply for med school. ITs just that the 7/8 year programs guarentee you a spot in med school. Howeveer i am hesitant to apply to them and then kept rejected because of the C's i have and thus i would lose my chance to go to rutgers which is my number 1 choice. WHat do you guys think? Again im sorry to be a pain, its just i have no idea what to do! thanks alot!

I'm not the most knowledgable poster on this subject matter, but if I were in your position I wouldn't apply to any of the 7/8 year med programs as they are somewhat competitive. Most applicants will probaly have better gpa, sats, and etc.(I'm not trying to be mean btw.) But if you score significantly better in the SATs, like say a 1200/1600, then maybe give it a shot. Again this is just one opinion so don't take it too seriously.

dude joe....thats exactly what i need people to say, i dont take it personaly because i know you are just trying to help. I think you are 100 percnet right, because thats the smarter thing to do.

Excuse me for my bluntness, but don't waste your time or money applying to any 7/8 yr programs, you aren't even close to being competitive enough. Just get As/Bs in all your classes and prepare for the SAT/ACT. Also, I know its too late seeing as you're a senior, but does your hs offer any AP classes? If so, why didn't you take any?
