Please predict my chances

Hi, everyone! I hope everyone is not stressed out like I am. If you are, just know that you will make it XD. Anyway, I just want to see your thoughts about my chances of getting accepted into UW (Seattle). Here are my stats!

O.O.S student
State: Georgia

Race: Asian (Indian, Chinese)

Information about my School: Union Grove High School; It was ranked in the top 1000 schools by usnews.com for 2008 and 2009, and one of the best schools in our state. As for this year, nothing special nationally, but we’re still one of the best in the state

GPA Unweighted: 3.31
ACT: 23 (I took it a month after I had a severe concussion, and I felt its aftereffects i.e. drawing mental blanks and headaches)

Rigor:
-AP Lang/Comp (Junior)
-AP Biology (Junior)
-AP Psychology (Senior)
-AP Calculus (Senior)
-AP Physics I (Senior)
-AP English Lit/Comp (Senior)
-AP Spanish (Senior)
-AP Government (Senior)

took honor classes as well

EC:
-SkillsUSA (member; 2 years)
-Gaming Club (Vice president; 1 year)
-Union Grove Track and Field (Varsity; 4 years)
-Union Grove Cross Country (Varsity; top fifty in the State for the class of 2015)
-Sprint Athletics Track Club (Prestigious Track Club; produced notable athletes such as Michael Rodgers, Jordan Moore, and Morgan Snow; 3 years)
-National Spanish Honors Society (Member, 2 years)

Essays:

-Personal Statement (What obstacle did I overcome and what did l learn)
- Summary: I wrote about my concussion weeks before the start of my senior year. It caused many problems that year. I was not able to achieve my goal of being in the top ten in the state, and I had a poor start to school. I was sad and felt like quitting, but during a hard run in the mountains, I had realization that we all go through adverse events. Rather than giving into despair, an individual must pick himself up and overcome adversity.

-Short Response (What could I contribute to the University of Washington?)
- Summary: While I am not the most intellectual or possess any special skill, I can contribute the core characteristics of charisma and dedication. When people see my steadfast dedication, many will be inspired to work hard towards their goals. When I see someone struggling or hiding their struggles, I get to know them and provide empathy.

-Additional Information About yourself:
- Summary: I talked about the major that I would like to placed in, and explained why I have chosen to attend the University of Washington.

About my essays, I wrote about them passionately and with quality. I triple-checked to make sure my ideas flowed, spelling was good, proper and good use of vocabulary, no abruptness, proper grammar, etc. So, I hope they help with my weak GPA and ACT :3

You’re pretty much down in the lowest quarter of the entering class. You’re going to find a bunch of students down there with “hooks” that you don’t have. This is going to be a reach for you.

Can you pay?

My parents have money set aside for me, and If I am accepted by most of the scholarships I applied for (i.e. Gates Millenmium Scholarship), then yes, I can pay. Btw, thanks for your insight ^_^!

@JustOneDad Also, I am curious. What do you mean by “hooks”?

I’m not JustOneDad clearly but I think he meant that while your concussion is certainly a serious matter and a definite source of adversity, don’t get me wrong, there might be kids in your sort of range who faced extreme poverty or something a bit more serious/long lasting than your concussion, or possess something that is extremely unique. While you have a good “resume” overall, there aren’t many particular specifics that really JUMP out. Since you are already on the “lowish-end” of the spectrum here, the admissions folk might be more inclined to pick unique but possibly “worse” (objectively) candidates than a possibly better but “less unique” applicant such as yourself. Again, not to sound condescending or anything, and not to speak for JustOneDad, but I think that’s what he was referencing.

Thanks @Saj3118! I understand and appreciate the clarification

Don’t forget the Varsity athletes down there. And how many In-State students did you think you would edge out for admission?

Gates Scholarship? By your own description, you don’t qualify for that.

*Minimum GPA: 3.3

Ethnicities:
African American/Black, American Indian - Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American, Hispanic American*

@JustOneDad I never really thought about that question of how many edging out for admission, so I do not know. I applied because I researched the school and screamed opportunity and promise at me. As for Gates, I also thought I did not qualify, but my counselors have talked with the GMS about my status. After discussing, she told me to apply, so I did. =/

Well, good luck with that. As U of W is a state school they have an obligation to give preference to qualified residents. OOS applicants need to be a little higher on the ladder.

What’s wrong with schools closer to home?

@JustOneDad Thanks for the Luck, I am going to need it! Nothing is wrong with the schools around here. I have applied to some such as UGA, GA Tech, and Mercer. But, why I picked UoW? I feel the school offers alot of promise to its students. The schools around do so too, but I feel UoW offers the most out of my choices, therefore it is my number one pick. Even though I am on the low end of the spectrum, I have my hopes (lol). On another note, I appreciate the input you have given and helping me understand the admissions process. Gives me something to think about for other applications.

The UW is a great school and has unlimited opportunity, but your schools have more than anyone could even take advantage of, too.

On the other hand, at a really big school, you have to make a little more effort to grab that opportunity. There’s not someone looking out for you all the time.

You most likely wont be accepted. Your GPA is way to low for out of state; UW wants nothing but quality when it comes to accepting people into their college.

@edjarrez haha, yea, i’m starting to see that lol… oh well, just gonna have to do my best and transfer. Thanks for your honesty though!

@BlazingAsian‌

Your stats are not the most competitive; therefore, like JustOneDad has stated above, you must have something that separates you from all the other applicants in the bottom tier.
Luckily you have a heavy course load and a variety of ECs, which “may” play in your favor.
Best of luck to you.

@UWchancemeh‌ your input is greatly appreciated! yeah I realize that my atrocious ACT score and subpar GPA would not be competitive, and I do hope that my course load and ECs are taken into consideration! It’s Wishful thinking but w/e lol. Also, thanks for you luck, gonna need it!
