*I will return the favor! *

I don’t quite understand this, and it’s used all over the College Advice & Search forums. If you’re requesting for advice, why should you be able to provide suggestions on similar matters in return. It makes me assume one of two things, either:

1) you figure it’s appealing to students in your position and so you use it to draw as many responses as possible (in which case, what makes you think students in your position would be able to provide you with educated suggestions if they themselves are going to want you to “return the favor”), or

2) you already know the relative answer, given that you feel you would be capable of providing a suggestion in response (this reason applies more to chance threads, as I’m sure most of them already know relatively where they stand - they just want an ego boost/stress relief).

Not meant to call you out or be rude, I just started pondering about this after I read it since I see it all the time, esp. in chance threads.

I don’t think that this question deserves a response. However, I will give it to you:

Not everybody has an accurate self image. This includes their qualifications for colleges. Sometimes, it is easier for people you don’t know to give you a better, more objective response. There is relatively little bias on the “chance” threads, people just look at the numbers and facts; just as an admissions officer would.

As for why I will “chance back”…I never get a response if I don’t chance back.

All of them are great for pre-med, no need to rank because such a rank has no real tie over into quality or opportunities available.

Just on a completely isolated side, no relevance to you handiman, I have to say I’ve actually wondered the exact same about that common phrase used. I don’t see how difficult it is for all those students to make an unbiased observation that they must ask for people’s “chances”. You have 2200 SAT, school’s average acceptance is 2230, you are below average barely. You have 3.9 GPA, school’s average acceptance is 3.8, you are above average barely. Now how hard was that? Your guess is as good as anyone else’s out there (or in other words, everyone else’s guess is just as worthless as yours - LOL (I don’t mean that, just thought it was funny)). (Not talking bad about them, if it suits then shoot for the stars!) “I never get a response if I don’t chance back.” - But you can’t chance back until you get a response…

Here’s the thing with people’s “chances.” All in all, the only thing people ever say is, "yeah, you’ve definitely got a shot; yeah, you’ve got a chance; yeah, they’ll definitely look hard at your app; yeah, you’re definitely in the range of what that school likes; yeah, but you need to raise your SAT first; yeah, but your GPA is a bit low, raise it first; etc. In which case, EH’s point stands - you could have known this all on your own (that is, the fact that you “have a shot” or that you “need to raise that SAT” (or GPA)). So essentially, what people tell you isn’t going to change what you think or know to believe about your app - the only thing it will change is your ego or stress. And when you say “people” in “people just look at the numbers and facts,” to be technical, the word should be 17-18 yr old students because that’s who the offer of chancing back is targeted at.

I feel like c/ping EH’s post everytime I run into one… but then I’d just be a complete d- baha

Sorry handiman, didn’t mean to target so much at you. Just pondering strictly on the phrase.

if maximizing your gpa is the only goal, then Brown is the no-brainer, altho personally I’d prefer Duke (college sports fan).
