Please recommend some safeties and matches?

Hi I am going to be a junior soon and I was wondering if anybody could recommend some safeties and matches for me? here are my stats:

GPA 3.7

Projected SAT 2250-2300 (I am a good standardized test taker)

EC's are varsity tennis and squash, will be captain on both senior year, student senate junior year, freshman and sophomore leadership committees, key ambassador club (Tours around prospective students, need to be selected to be in it), and about 100 hours of community service

bummmmmpppp

Haha it’s a little tough to “project” SAT scores, but with those stats, you’ll have to also consider your location. Your state public universities/flagship are usually your safeties and matches.

How rigorous is your schedule?
Do you have any location preferences?
What about an ACT score? PSAT?

Do you want a more science/math oriented school, or humanities?

How much can your family pay?

What kind of school: LAC? Tech? Large State? Medium privates?

What part of the country? Weather? Urban/rural/suburban?

What kind of culture? liberal/conservative, rah-rah, preppy, granola, artsy, quirky, intellectual, single sex, religious - give us some descriptive terms of the kind of environment you see yourself in.

As you can see, there are hundreds of schools that would be safeties or matches based on the info you’ve provided, so we need more to help us narrow it down some.

Your safety and match schools are going to depend on your budget since many/most do not give much financial aid and will gap you.

However, if you end up with that high SAT, then there are schools that will give you merit money.

What is your major?

What was your PSAT score?

What state are you in?

How much will your family pay? If you don’t know, ask them.

What else do you want in a school? Quiet? Rah rah with Div I sports to watch? Rural? City setting? Warm weather? Cold/snowy weather?

im pretty sure my family would pay like 35k per year for college, i am in new england and and would be willing to go out to chicago or something but not as far as cali unless i got into stanford or something

im not exactly sure about major yet though, most likely history or science

PSAT scores: 68 on CR (98th percentile) 66 on math(96th percentile) and 63 on writing (94th percentile) all these percentiles are for sophomores since that was what i was when i took it

oh yeah and i want co-ed and i dont mind cold weather at all, and a decent amount of partying would be nice

Oh…you’re a rising junior…well be sure to take the PSAT in October…good luck with that.

since your parents will pay $35k, that may suggest that you won’t qualify for much/any need-based aid…since schools often expect families to pay more than they can afford.

im pretty sure my family would pay like 35k per year for college

Check on this to find out for sure.

What is your likely major or career?

Do you want a school that is within driving distance?

you should wait until you get your al least psat scores back to have a more meaningful college list. so finish fall semester junior year and take a look at your credentials then.

OP did take the PSAT’s and did rather well for his soph year. A score of 197 on the PSAT’s in 10th grade, coorelates to about a 2000 on SAT’s. OP, if you prep a lot this summer, you actually stand a shot at qualifying for National Merit SemiF. S1 had 208 soph. year, then a 228 (no prep) junior year. It all depends on the area you live in, but check for your state and see what you would need to get to reach commended or hopefully semifinalist. There’s lots of threads on it, and some studying now could make all the difference for you when you are applying to colleges (and it looks like you may want to focus on some merit scholarship known schools). Do make sure to prep for SAT’s with a course that is geared for a kid with your PSAT scores. It will make a diff. as well. Some people self-study well, but if you really want to get up to a 2300 (my son’s scores --800 cr, 790w,710m), a course can be extremely helpful if taken right before you take SAT’s. If you are in DC area, pm me and I will send you the link to an excellent prep course.

Without other info. it’s hard to say what schools would be a good fit for you. There are a lot that would be a good match/target/reach, but are you wanting a liberal arts college, or a big university, what kind of student body do you want, greek system, no greek system? One thing that can help people offer you advice is to give us a list of schools you are already considering, then we can offer some more that seem to be a similar school and fit.

I admit, I haven’t read through all the thread, but did you say what state you are in? I think you just mentioned east? Is there a good state flagship, any other state options for safeties?

i live in rhode island so URI is a pretty good school, but I think i would like a big university rather than a small college. do you think I would get into Lehigh University?
