Please tell me about some great schools where the COA is under $35,000 a year

On my international theme, you might also look at colleges in the UK. Of course you would want to factor in extra cost for travel to and fro (say $3000), but can be a bargain.

U of Edinburgh, as but one example, is currently $16,700 USD for tuition, another $7500 for room and board. That comes to $24,000 COA. Fabulous school too. Direct flights to loads of major US cities.

Elon is a beautiful campus. D and I were there in February when it was snowing/raining and it was still gorgeous! We had no trouble getting in/out of Raleigh-Durham airport from Austin. Greensboro is a bit closer but was much pricier when we were looking at flights. But I think COA

Noticed Coastal Carolina was on soozievt’s list. We are going there in 2 weeks. Staying on the beach at Myrtle Beach, which is about 15 minutes from campus. Their OOS COA this year is $25,970.

Pay no attention to the haters…NC State is not your big grassy quad surrounded by red brick/white columned buidlings kind of campus but we here at the PackHome don’t think it’s ugly. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. S1 loved his four years there and misses it dearly now that’s he graduated. It’s a very good school at a very good price for OOS.
Raleigh, NC is a city of 385,000 and NCSU is right in the middle… ACC sports, great weather, friendly kids, not Greek dominated, Raleigh/Durham International airport just a taxi ride away.

Does Elon still fall below $35,000?

Adding to my list…

James Madison University
McGill University
Ohio University
University of Georgia
University of Minnesota
York College of Pennsylvania

Elon does fall below the $35,000 at least for 2009-2010.

Cost for Elon for Out of State students is: $33,725.

Oops, we cross posted.

Howard University, and most HBCU 's!

FIT in NYC is actually a SUNY. Little did we know.

LOL, I actually knew that about FIT, from back when she was in her “I want to be in fashion” phase.

Y’all have given me a lot to research! Thanks so much.

What about York College of Pennsylvania? Know anything about that?

I don’t think anyone recommended Towson…I presume there’s a good reason…

YCP doesn’t have a great reputation. I dont think many people in Philadelphia have heard of it. Temple is much better respected locally, nationally, and internationally.

Figures - tuition at Temple is about $8000 a year more.

If your daughter qualifies for merit scholarship (e.g. Global Citizens 12,000/year), Goucher College would be in the running.

SUNY Stony Brook. Not as cold as the rest of NY. Easy train ride to NYC. Very reasonable.

Campus has recently undergone a lot of gentrification.

Some of the schools my D applied to were Kent State (Kent OH), JMU, VA Tech, and Mercyhurst, and as I recall, their tuitions were around your approximate numbers. I saw several recommendations for PITT, and also at least one for PENN STATE. Being from PA, I would highly recommend both PITT and Penn State. We live in the shadow of Penn State, and although State College is a smaller town, it becomes the 3rd largest city in the state on home football weekends. There is a ton of stuff for the kids to do here. Mercyhurst is a small Catholic school located in Erie, so it is a smaller school feel with a more urban setting, but located in what looked to be a safe residential area of Erie. You may want to have a look at that as well. I loked VA Tech, and found the feel of Blacksburg to be much like the feel of State College and the campus was beautiful. We also went to JMU, which has I-81 running thru the middle of campus, but a very nice school, very friendly. My D has wanted to to to Cornell for several years and was one of the very fortunate few to get accepted there.

Good luck in your search. I’d be happy to answer any questions you have on places we visited or the Central PA area.

Klipinger’s has a list of best public college values and has a table that you can choose to sort by OOS total costs, or other features.

missypie, let me know if you’re interested in JMU. I see the campus from my house. Fantastic new performing arts building opening any day now. And no, you don’t need to cross 81 to get there. :)

JMU is interesting

With respect to Goucher, D loves Baltimore, but she wants a larger school.

Since JMU is on the table…Took my dog to the Vet. this a.m. Out of curiosity, I asked her where she went to college. She went to James Madison Univ. for undergrad and Cornell for Vet sch.

I have friends who have D’s at Elon and at Appalachian State and both are very very happy as freshman. Know nothing more than this. :)
