University in the US for Fall 2016 - up to 22,000$/year

Hi there!

I am looking for some universities in the US that still accept applications. Their complete COA should be about 22,000$/year, but the less the better. I even found some schools ready to offer me scholarships so that COA would be ~14,000$.

I am looking for a medium-sized to large school. It shouldn’t have any religious affiliation unless it wouldn’t affect campus life. The school should also give a real college experience. My preferred location would be Florida, California and Utah but I’d be happy with any other state as well.

I already searched in the CollegeBoard search tool and found a few schools like Missouri State University, Utah Valley University and the University of South Dakota. No one in Florida or CA :(. But I’d really like to see some recommendations from you.
My SAT scores are average if you need this information.

Thank you!! :))

California and Florida are both very popular destinations – they have so many internationals willing to pay $50,000+/year that there’s not much incentive for them to lower their costs for any but the most highly accomplished applicants. Maybe some other posters can suggest a few schools - but with your budget and “average” SATs, I can’t think of any.

With these constraints, you should be flexible in terms of location. Since you’re open to Utah, look for other schools in the western states – for example, University of Montana and Montana State (gorgeous, good skiing) or options in Idaho and Wyoming. Schools in the “mid-west” – the states in the middle of the US – also tend to be more budget-friendly.

Run the College Navigator search engine. http://nces.ed.gov/collegenavigator/
Click on “More Search Options” then list your state as “Other” and set the maximum tuition and fees to $10,000 That would leave you with $12,000 for your living expenses, travel, etc. Once you get the first list, you can narrow it further by selecting other factors that are important to you.

Here is the search link I got just now for public and private non-profit institutions that award bachelor’s degrees:

It’s pretty random that you want to go to college in Utah lol.
So you are a senior right now? Pretty late to start applying tbh. Most schools have already released their decisions!
Go to college board or the common app, they have a master list of those still accepting apps.

Thanks to all of you. I already used the search engine, I’d just like to know if you have any recommendations for me.
Gonna post some schools I found and maybe it’s easier for you to give me recommendations from that list (these with a star are my favorites).

Southwest Minnesota State
University of Wisconsin - Whitewater
West Texas A&M
Missouri State*
University of South Dakota
Southern Utah University *
Utah Valley University (though Utah is gonna rise tuition 3.47 times this year!)
In Florida I have found some.gorgeous colleges, but all of them are a bit more expensive.
FAU*
FIU

Utah? BYU. $22k COA for non-LDS.

And you won’t be distracted by drunken partying.

What about Flagler ? Stetson may be able to lower costs due to TOEFL (score ?)

Thanks to both of you, too :). BYU is too conservative, I’ll check out Flagler and Stetson when I’m home from work. I don’t have an TOEFL score though, but if it’d help to take it, no problem.

Of course it’d help !!

Okay, then I’m gonna check that out. In the meantime if you’ve got any other suggestion, tell me please :).

I don’t know what your home country is, and what your options there are. Just know that the schools you’ve listed aren’t well known outside their areas, and likely not worth the amount of money you’re being asked to pay. Just my opinion, of course.

Okay thanks. I’ve already thought well about that and it’s the best decision for me.

Okay I just emailed Stetson University, their COA is 55,000$ a year, I asked them if they would be able to provide enough scholarships. If yes, it’d be my favorite offering everything I looked for just right after Southern Utah. 100% match. That’s why I’m asking here, I somehow oversaw that in the search engine. Thank you MYOS :).

What about the University of Maine at Fort Kent? Does anybody know anything about it? Their cost would be about 14,000$ after speaking to their counsellor.

Otherwise, there’ll be a list published around May 6th where the colleges that miscalculated yield will indicate whether they still admit freshmen or transfer students and with financial aid or not. Some of these colleges may be happy with a student who can bring $22,000.

Are there actually decent univesities-good grad rate, good retention, good research/academic in general-with 22k/year?

@MYOS1634
Okay thanks. But can this list be used by international students?

Yes. But you can’t tell ahead of time which universities will be on the list, how many will be excellent and how many will be mediocre… It has to be a university that can afford to discount tuition and can’t afford to let an interested student go. Each year the Nacac May list includes pretty good universities and decent universities, certainly quite a few on the level of SouthUtah!!
You’d need to have your commonapp complete and ready to go, as well as your TOEFL scores ((and if you took it and got good scores SAT or ACT)…

For members of the LDS church, BYU meets that standard @paul2752 . It is not a good choice for most students because of the strong religious focus. Bemidji State in Minnesota has been reported to be decent, and diligent students can make their own opportunities at the various public Us on the College Navigator $10k tuition & fees list. Among these, Miami Dade has a very strong reputation as a community college, and would certainly provide a solid education for the first two years. However, I don’t know anything about the newer 4-year degree programs there.

Flagler said they wouldn’t be able to provide enough scholarships. Thank you MYOS and happymomof1. I’ll email Bemidji State. Are there any other universities in Florida, up to about 22k?
