I just emailed my 6th grade reading teacher and 7th grade science teacher about Northwestern, and they're thrilled that I got in! They both graduated from there.

Sounds like it is all settled. Congratulations!

Wait, actually, my 7th grade science teacher graduated from the University of Chicago. She's still thrilled though.

Thanks, midmo!

So, several weeks ago, I deposited to Northwestern, bought a sweatshirt and a decal, contacted everyone about my decision to attend, signed my housing contract and was assigned a roommate, joined all kinds of Northwestern groups on Facebook. Since the Cornell decision hadn't come yet, I told my admissions contact there early last week that I was depositing to Northwestern, since a decision hadn't been made yet. Tonight, I received my rejection from Cornell ILR and am glad that someone who considered it his/her first choice got it. Definitely no hard feelings here.

Final results:
Applied: Emory (the College-- Interdisciplinary Studies in Culture and Society + Gender Studies), WashU (Arts & Sciences-- American Culture Studies/Gender Studies ), Northwestern (Human Development + Gender Studies), Cornell (Industrial/Labor Relations), Rice (Women & Gender Studies)
Accepted: Emory, WashU, Northwestern, Rice
Denied: Cornell ILR
Attending: Northwestern

I applied to ILR because of the Organizational Behavioral component, but the committee probably sensed that I wasn't interested in the workplace studies part because I was very straightforward in my statements. I'm glad they accepted students whose interests fit better. This is a lesson to future applicants that a 60% transfer acceptance rate doesn't mean an easy acceptance!

That said, I'm really excited about Northwestern! I met with my adviser today and planned out my courses/study abroad/practicum/research (tentatively, of course) for the next 2 1/2 years :)

Sorry you didn't choose WashU !!!! Good luck at Northwestern, it is a great school too.

My blood now runs purple!

I'm also sorry that I could attend only one school... like I said before, I'm in love with both.

My admissions contact at Cornell ILR just emailed me saying I was a "strong" student and that I was "admissible" but that they still can't admit me. My dad says it's because I'm not meant for the workplace because I can't read social cues, and therefore not a good fit for a workplace studies program. My mom and friends disagree, saying I could succeed not just in academia but also the workplace.

Isn't ILR largely New York State funded, part of the public/private sector of Cornell? It is possible that they are committed to taking a certain number of instate applicants, some of whom may have been less qualified than you are.

I was under the impression that out-of-staters got an admissions advantage because ILR has no trouble attracting in-state applicants.

As an update, my first quarter at Northwestern just ended, and my official term GPA on an all 300-level courseload is a 3.9! This is great news especially given my probably borderline acceptance :)

sanjenferrer: I'm not really clear how you finally ended up making your decision to attend NU vs Wash U. What was it? And now, looking back, are you pleased with your decision? It seems like a lot of people make a choice between these 2 schools.

Congrats to you!
