This is going to sound so cliche but i'm really worried about this. Freshman year for me pretty much sucked. My average GPA was in the 2.8-2.9 ish. My grades were awful and i'm horrified with myself. They were a D- in Gym, failed Honors Geometry, got a C in cooking, got an A in AP World History(was motivated in this class), a B in Honors Biology, a B in Honors English and a C in Honors two spanish. I'm currently taking Geometry in summer school and its been going well thanks to an awesome teacher and my new found determination to not end up flipping burgers at Mcdonalds. I know the fault was totally mine and I totally accept that. I won't make the same mistakes. I won't be sleeping through classes and will study my ass off, and actually opening the textbook for more than just one class. I plan to get straight As through the rest of High School and i'm dedicated to that. (Already told myself that if I didn't succeed i'll be committing suicide. Harsh, but with a procrastination personality like mine, I need to threaten myself.) This year I will be taking only AP economics and Honors English which greatly disappoints me, but i'm hoping that once they see my improvement I can be back in the Honors/AP route that was planned for me. I want to know if there is still a chance that I could get into a good college if they see an upward trend and I test pretty decent Junior year. I want to be registered in medical school, if that helps. PLEASE PLEASE TELL ME IF THERE IS STILL A CHANCE THAT I CAN MAKE IT. Oh, and I plan to do tons of volunteer during the summer of next year.

Telling yourself you will commit suicide if you don’t get all As isn’t harsh- it’s dangerous, reeks of a lack of self-respect, and has no place on CC. Do your best, but if you want to go to med school, you should be motivated by a love of learning or a need to help your fellow man, not the sword of suicide hanging over your life

Lol okay
You’re right way too much and I apologize for that unnecessary episode of melodrama. i’ll try to think of the positive reasons…But do you think I still have a shot at a fairy decent college?

No, wait dude. That suicide threat is scaring me and I really hope you’re exaggerating. Don’t post things like that on the internet.

Yes you will. Don’t worry, just do your best. Colleges will take notice if the upward trend. As long as you get excellent grades for the next few years, you will get into a decent university. Just try your best, but don’t tell yourself that you’ll commit suicide. You’re lucky to even have a life, so make the best of it.

Yeah, sorry about that. I realize that a really bad way to motivate myself, especialy since its not necessarily mine to take. Sorry for scaring you…

I promise you that you will end up at a great univeristy if you just try your hardest these next few years.

Some colleges don’t even look at freshman year. And even for those that do, it generally carries much less weight than subsequent years. A strong upward trend will do you wonders.

What others have said is right. If you’re worried, just apply to schools that don’t look at freshman year and you’ll be set. I think you’ll be able to do it with the right kind of motivation (glad to see you’re not serious about the suicide thing), and your A in AP World History proves that. Also, if you want to try for some competitive schools (not necesarilly THE most competitive schools), try to do some ECs you enjoy, like, I don’t know, killing Dark Lords or something Just do your best and you’ll be fine.
